Soul Singing with Anne Marie

Hi!  I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage®  facilitator in Massachusetts.  If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage, this column is especially for you.

Suggestions for newcomers to SoulCollage:

  • Find a SoulCollage Facilitator near you.
  • Download the Getting Started with SoulCollage
    Workshop in a Box
    .
  • Visit KaleidoSoul and click on What is SoulCollage, SoulCollage Deck, and Making the Cards on the left menu.
  • Seena Frost is the one who created SoulCollage®. Visit Seena's website and see what four cards come up for you in the automatic reading, then read some of Seena's articles.
  • Read Seena's book, SoulCollage.
  • Listen to Seena's CD, Introduction to SoulCollage.
  • Don't forget to take it easy and always, always trust the process!

    The Grateful One

Seena Frost has recently suggested that every SoulCollager create a "Grateful One" card for their deck.  Why?  Because gratitude is a quality, an idea, a practice that has the power to transform and bless our lives in many ways and on many levels.

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, I realized that I had a choice to make.  I could wallow in "woe is me" mode throughout the coming months of surgery and treatments. Or I could make a practice out of finding things every day to be grateful for.

I chose the latter, and I will always be glad that I did.  Because choosing to be thankful for the kind touch of a nurse instead of cursing the fact that toxic chemo was coursing through my veins...   choosing to be appreciative of my boss's willingness to give me time off for treatments instead of pitying myself for having cancer... choosing to be grateful for my surgeon's patience and my oncologist's tenderness instead of lashing out at them.... All of these choices changed me, from the inside out.  And they changed the entire background of my journey with cancer.

Now, I'm not saying that you need to receive a life-threatening diagnosis in order to learn the lessons that gratitude has to teach.  Not at all.  You can begin right now.  Today.  Stop reading this article and look around you.  Look within you.  Make a list.  Make a list every day.  And watch your life begin to change.

Pay attention to this part of you who is learning to be more grateful for what you've been given.  Be on the lookout for images that express this special part of you, and create a SoulCollage card for your deck when you find the "right" ones.

You can see my own deck's Gratitude card (and read my interpretation) on this Inner Surprises page.

You can also read more about my journey with breast cancer on this KaleidoSoul page.

Here are some of my favorite books on the practice of gratitude:

Simple Abundance Journal of Gratitude, by Sarah Ban Breathnach. You'll love this unique gratitude journal full of inspirational quotes.  It will motivate you to record 5 things you're grateful for each day.  Try this simple practice and watch what happens!

Gratitude: A Way of Life, edited by Louise Hay. Short essays on gratitude by some very wise people: Harold Bloomfield, Wayne Dyer, Joan Borysenko, Shakti Gawain, Gerald Jampolsky, Susan Jeffers, Emmett Miller... and many more. Uplifting and practical ideas for incorporating gratitude into your own way of life.

    Quotations on Gratitude

Gratitude turns problems into blessings, and the unexpected into gifts. ---Melody Beattie

You say grace before meals.  All right.  But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.  --- G.K. Chesterton

Gratitude is twofold--love coming to visit us and love running out to greet a welcome guest. --- Henry Van Dyke

Anne Marie Bennett is a freelance writer, self- taught artist and SoulCollage® facilitator who trained with Seena Frost. Her background is elementary education, computer software training, writing, and mixed media art. She lives, laughs, writes, and sings (and makes her own SoulCollage® cards!) in Beverly, MA. More of Anne Marie's cards/interpretations are available on her blog, Inner Surprises.

    Please read more about
    upcoming workshops/retreats with Anne Marie.
