Death as an ArchetypeWhen I mentioned to a non-SoulCollaging friend last week that I was working on a newsletter with the theme of Death, she was incredulous. "A whole newsletter? Isn't that a bit gruesome?" she asked with what I swear was a shudder.
You might actually be thinking the same thing, and that's perfectly okay. Death isn't something we talk about on a regular basis. Usually we even resist any thought about it, and even moreso the reality of it when it comes near to us in some way.
And that is exactly why I wanted to focus a whole issue on this topic. As SoulCollagers, we are continually trying to bring wholeness to our lives, via our Decks. This is why Seena Frost, author of SoulCollage, tells us "It is well to make a SoulCollage card for Death, because your deck cannot be complete without it."
Seenaalso wrote, "The essence of Death is transformation. Like the Fool, itis an Interrupter and a Surpriser. Unlike the Fool, it has littlesense of humor, and the losses and changes experienced in thetransforming experience may be greater than those that the Foolinitiates. When this card (Death) is drawn in a Reading, it hassomething to do with moving on, leaving something behind, or some kindof change."
Death is a part of life. There is absolutely no escaping it. It is an archetype that finds its way into every person's life, with no regard to religion, philosophy, occupation, race, gender, or culture. I urge you to look at the Death cards in Seena's book, as well as the ones in this newsletter (to the right) and the additional page as well.
I also invite you to join us as we consider this topic further in our July 30 tele-class with Roberta Rook, SoulCollage Facilitator and Grief Counselor in Maryland:
Illustrating Healing:SoulCollage & the Grief Journey
Inthe meantime, why not start searching out images for a Death Council(archetype) card for your own Deck? It's important to wait for justthe right images. And as you can see from our reader's cards in thisissue, there are as many different depictions of Death as there arepeople.
You might even make a Death card this year... and then several yearsfrom now, you might need to make a different one, depending on how your understanding of Death changes and grows as you change and grow. Again, as in all things SoulCollage, it's perfectly okay.

Soul Symphonies with Karen
| My name is Karen Mann and I'm a SoulCollage® facilitator from Melbourne, Australia. This column is for those of you who have already made some cards & are ready to discover the symphony of voices inside of you and around you.
In Memory of LynThis is thestory about how one of my SoulCollage cards "spoke to me" as I wasdealing with the loss of a dear friend. Lyn and I met and became friends when we shared a room at the June 2004 SoulCollageFacilitator Training. We had stayed intouch via email and phone, sharing our SoulCollage cards and their meanings andbecoming great friends. It is now threeyears since I received an email from Lyn's husband telling me the news that shehad died. As I was reading the emailfrom him (with tears streaming down my face) I received a synchronistic messagethat assisted me with my grieving/healing processes. My partner had a music video channel on inthe next room and called me over to see the video that was on because it was aversion of a song that she'd never seen before. When I went to see, it was JanetJackson's - "Together Again."
This song is onethat holds great significance for me because it was a song which comforted me previouslywhen a close friend had died. The lyricsare about losing a friend or lover and you can read the complete lyrics onthis page. Everywhere I go Every smile I see I know you are there Smilin' back atme Dancin' in the moonlight I know you are free 'Cause I can see your star Shinin' down on me Good times we'll share again Makes me wanna dance. Say it loud and proud All my love's for you Always been a true angel to me...
Sometimes hear you whisperin' No more pain No worries will you ever see now baby I'm so happy for my baby Hearing thisspecial song was enough of a magic moment for me to feel a connection to ahigher energy, but then I saw the imagery in the film clipwhich includes an empty cage and a butterfly! These are images I use a lot in my artworkand are very significant for me. Itreminded me in particular of a SoulCollage card which at the time I called "Transformation," (see card in right column, above)but I'm now starting to sense it may in fact be my "Death" card. I felt drawn to spending time with this cardand journaling with it after seeing this film clip. This message wasrelevant on two levels. It felt like a message about Lyn, but it was also amessage that was very relevant to my current life circumstances as well. Journaling with this card was a very powerfulexperience for me, and the synchronicities that brought me to create this card still give me goose bumps. Another interestingmoment of synchronicity occurred as I was preparing to write thiscolumn for Soul Songs. A couple of days ago I received an email fromLyn's husband to let me know he'd been looking through Lyn's SoulCollage cardsand had thought of me. As I had lostcontact with him a couple of years ago, when both of us changed emailaddresses, this recent contact felt really special. I truly feel like someone is "whisperin' " to me... In Loving Memory of Lyn Snow- 1960- 2005
(This is a card from my Community Suit that I made tohonour Lyn)
