    Sexuality and SoulCollage

In terms of topics that people have a hard time talking about, sexuality ranks right up there at the tippity top.  Because of this, I want to express my gratitude for the five women who shared their SoulCollage cards and writings on this sensitive subject. I also would like to applaud Karen Mann for her column (see below) that she has written with such honesty and grace.

I have posted two of my own cards about some recent experiences with sexuality on my blog, Inner Surprises.  You can read what I've written there.

What I suggest this month is that you read what I've written, and what Karen has written, and absorb the energy from the cards that you see here in this issue of Soul Songs.

Then spend some time listening "inside."  What do your inner voices have to say about what's going on with you sexually?  Are they voices of pleasure, joy, fear, shame, anger, curiosity, gratitude, or...?

If there are sexual wounds that haven't healed or if you are experiencing sexual difficulty in some way, look through your Council cards and Companion cards.  Do any of them have love, support, or wisdom to offer you in this area?

And please don't overlook those in your Community. There is much healing to be found there as well!

Look through your saved-up SoulCollage images that haven't found a "home" yet on a card.  Do any of them have anything to say about your Sexual Self?  Is it time to make a SoulCollage card for your deck about this topic?

Anne Marie Bennett is a freelance writer, self- taught artist and SoulCollage® facilitator who trained with Seena Frost. Her background is elementary education, computer software training, writing, and mixed media art. She lives, laughs, writes, and sings (and makes her own SoulCollage® cards!) in Beverly, MA. More of Anne Marie's cards/interpretations are available on her blog, Inner Surprises.

Soul Symphonies with Karen
My name is Karen Mann and I'm a SoulCollage® facilitator from Melbourne, Australia. This column is for those of you who have already made some cards & are ready to discover the symphony of voices inside of you and around you.

It's Not Really About My Sexuality

When I was askedto write about the topic of "sexuality" and how I've explored it through mySoulCollage practice I felt quite conflicted.  Deciding what to write about was quite a bigdecision, raising many questions for me. How much will I share?  How willthose who read my story respond?  What doI feel comfortable writing about?

The reason formy trepidation is that my life partner is a woman, and announcing this and "comingout" to you is a big deal for me.  Thereis a part of me that feels that sometimes I am judged on the basis of my sexualpreference, and therefore in certain circumstances I choose not to share thisinformation.  On the other hand, I feelthat this is just part of who I am, and it should be no issue to discuss thiswith you, although I'm the further confused because maybe there is no need totell you this at all.  I could write anarticle about sexuality without mentioning my sexual orientation at all, becausein a way it is immaterial.

Herein lies adilemma I face on a regular basis.  Do Ikeep this fact about myself to myself, as it really is no one else's business,or should I share it when appropriate, as it is a part of my life and who Iam?

One of mySoulCollage cards that deals with this confusion
is called "Coming Out of theShadows."  This is the first SoulCollagecard I ever made about my sexuality, and interestingly enough I haven't reallydone any journaling work with this card. It was as though making this card was a huge enough step, having towrite about it was too much to cope with at the time.

When I journaledwith this card today I wrote:

"I am the one who has hidden an aspect of my true selffrom many.  I am scared to share thispart of my life for fear of being judged. I have chosen to hide my relationship preference from others in thepast, but now I am growing braver and getting ready to be my true authenticself."

Another cardalong this theme of "coming out" is called "Showing my True Self".  "I amthe one who has tried many things, looking for what is right for me.  I am the one who has pretended to besomething that is not quite true in order to be liked.  In the past I have hidden my true self andwas too scared just to be me."

What I am beginningto realize is that the issues illustrated in these cards have less to do withmy sexuality than I initially thought and more to do with how I feel aboutmyself.  Feeling judged and like I do notlive up to others' expectations is a theme that follows me into many aspects ofmy life.  I am scared that I won't beaccepted by other parents at my son's school because I'm much younger than theyare.  I'm afraid I won't be takenseriously in my professional life because I don't work fulltime.  I'm worried about how I have been perceived inthe past because I was overweight.

Thislist goes on.  My nervousness about mysexuality is just one symptom of the same lack of confidence.

Making theseSoulCollage cards (and eventually journaling with them when I allowed myselfthe opportunity to confront the issues) has helped me to see that this is acontinuing theme throughout my life.  Whenviewed objectively I can see that there may be some people who are notcomfortable with my sexuality, but if I can learn to stop worrying so muchabout what other people think of me, I'm sure to enjoy life more.

Exploring these cards has helped me make adecision to stop hiding aspects of myself for fear that someone won't like meand instead choose to be honest about myself with others, because that feelsauthentic and true.
