Back-to-School Dreams
I've been recording my dreams in my journal since I was in high school. Since my mid-thirties I've been fascinated with my dreams and have noticed several recurring themes which have informed major decisions regarding my life's direction.
And while I have no cards in my deck directly inspired by any of my dreams, I do have a short story to tell about how my sleeptime dreams have been affected by the process of SoulCollage. Read on, and make of it what you will....
One of the major archetypes in my life is that of Teacher. Since I was young, I have found myself in many situations that involved the sharing of knowledge, both inner and outer, with others. In my twenties, I taught second grade. After that, I taught teachers and administrators for several years.
Then I met my husband-to-be Jeff, and after a brief courtship, I moved in with him and his two children. I left my job as consultant and threw all of my energies into creating a happy home for our new stepfamily.
That's when the "back-to-school dreams" started. Every September (or thereabouts), I would have at least one (usually more) dreams about teaching. In these dreams I would be getting my classroom ready for a new group of students. There were many variations on a theme, but I always awoke with a deep longing for and happy memories of my teaching days.
This went on for years and years, as I worked at a variety of other jobs that didn't satisfy that basic longing for me. Of course, I hadn't found SoulCollage yet, and I had no idea that certain archetypes were integral to the authenticity of my life.
BUT... when I discovered SoulCollage a few years ago, I was mysteriously (or so I thought) led to leave my office job and I began facilitating SoulCollage workshops both online and in person. I was teaching again. The classroom was very different, but I sensed a deep and abiding "Ahhhh...." and an immense feeling of being in the right place, doing the right thing... a feeling that I had not had in a long time.
As I furthered my practice of SoulCollage, I learned about archetypes and was able to name Teacher as one of my own. It was then that I realized that the Back-to-School dreams had stopped. And I haven't had one since.
I am certain that those dreams were little hints and reminders from this archetypal pattern in my life, little nudges to my subconscious mind that this part of me (my Teaching self) needed some time and attention. And I'm positive that when I began teaching again (even though it was different than any teaching I'd done before), my Teaching self didn't need to send me reminders through my dreams anymore.
Anne Marie Bennett is a freelance writer, self- taught artist and SoulCollage® facilitator who trained with Seena Frost. Dreaming SoulCollage
by Krista O'Connor
As you may be aware, SoulCollage® characters are generally brought to your cards through intuitive triggers in reflection, or meditation, or looking through magazines, or just simply going about your day. Another excellent way to do this is to collage characters that appear in your nightly dreams. Your dream characters tend to act out in scenes that portray qualities about yourself that relate directly to the current happenings in your waking life. Your dreaming mind is truly a creative genius! It's much smarter than your waking mind and you can bet that for better or worse, the qualities being portrayed are right on target. When I first discovered the SoulCollage® process, I didn't make the dream connection right away, but I was attracted to the idea of naming all the different aspects of myself and recognizing them in life situations. Just like you, I found this process fascinating. One morning I woke up after a super-vivid dream about a wild woman, whom I instantly recognized as a crone archetype and my first thought was: That would make a great SoulCollage card! Ah-ha! I immediately went back through my recent dream journalings and saw that many of my dream people would fit perfectly in one or another of the SoulCollage suits. As you can imagine, I was pretty exited about that and since then, I have made most of the cards in my deck from dream characters. s
This card is one I call Angel Guide. She is part of my Council Suit, and is one of my favorite Council cards! This Angel Guide has been with me since I was a little girl and I dream of her often. Growing up as a (nearly) deaf person...she was comfort and solace incarnate.
You can makeSoulCollage cards from your dreams too. Just start paying close attention to your dreams and the characters that inhabit them. This focus will bring forth clarity in your character qualities and they will be more easily recognized. That's really all there is to it. Read more about working with SoulCollage and dreams. Editor's Note: Abundant thanks to Krista for stepping in for Karen this month! I really hope you'll visit her website and continue with your own dreamwork on your journey with SoulCollage. |

In keeping with this month's theme, each card below represents (in some way) a dream or dreamwork from a SoulCollager.
Fish Full of Light Artist: Imelda Location: Ireland
I am one who promises you the fulfillment of potential. I am one who reminds you of the need to be patient. I am one who assures you that the treasure will be yours. I am one who remains with you through all your days.
A Glimpse Artist: Cynthia Location: Colorado
I am one who understands now what would have been. I am one who made choices to go another way and avoid the pain. I am one who knows the love that was there is with me now, forever. I am one who is ok with my decision because I have a lot of love in this life I've chosen and created. I am one who is grateful to be allowed to see a glimse into the "why." I am one who feels the love that would have been, as if it had been. I am one who knows that everything happens for a reason. I am one who is aware that our lives are not just the products of chance. I am one who knows that the people who would have been beside me are still there in different forms. I am one who can now put the "wonderings" behind me, because I know!
Flight to Nagasaki Artist: Robin Location: Virginia
I am the one in desperate need of nurturing and critical care. I am the one whose only help came from my dreams. I am the one sleeping beneath the shreds of my life. I am the one accessing nurturance and sustenance from the deep sea of my psyche.
Leap
Artist: Nancy Location: California
Come, come to the edge. Leap! Yes: body first,
trust body, trust body. Then mold features,
love face into being. Love: swing between layers,
touching stars, touching earth. Landing,
feet find path, find the way home. ******
