Soul Singing With Anne Marie

Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, then this column is especially for you!

    Workshop in a Box
    .
  • Visit KaleidoSoul and click on What is SoulCollage, SoulCollage Deck, and Making the Cards on the left menu.
  • Seena Frost is the one who created SoulCollage®. Visit Seena's website and see what four cards come up for you in the automatic reading, then read some of Seena's articles.
  • Read Seena's book, SoulCollage.
  • Listen to Seena's CD, Introduction to SoulCollage.
  • Don't forget to take it easy and always, always trust the process!

    Where Do I Begin?

When it comes to creative projects, it can be hard sometimes to just get started.  This is why I have a huge box full of beads, stringing wire, and silk thread on my art table that I haven't even touched.  It's also why I have shelves and drawers of collage papers and ephemera that I haven't looked at in months.

I simply don't know where to begin, and thinking of all of that "stuff" simply boggles my mind.  There are so many choices that these creative projects are actually quite overwhelming to me.

The same can be true with SoulCollage.  I've found that even seasoned SoulCollagers sometimes get "stuck" and have a hard time getting started with their card making.

So... where to begin if you're just beginning?  Where to begin if you're simply stuck?

Here are some simple steps to get your SoulCollage card making off the ground:

    • Sit down with a stack of magazines and start rippin' and tearin'. Don't use scissors, simply rip out the entire page of any image that you like.  Let the images choose you, as Seena Frost likes to say!
    • After you have a good-sized stack, spread them all out in front of you and place them in little piles according to theme or color or energy or idea.  You are the only one who can sort them, because it's YOUR soul that called those images to you.
    • Choose just one stack of images and make a card (or several) from them.

If you'd like some great ideas about where to get magazines and images, what kinds of materials to use, and how to layout/arrange your SoulCollage cards more imaginatively and meaningfully, you'll enjoy the KaleidoSoul E-book,
102 Tips and Tricks for Creating SoulCollage Cards Full of Beauty and Meaning
which is now available in the KaleidoSoul Shop.  Plus, if you purchase it this month, you'll receive FR*EE access to our May Tele-Playshop (see details above).

Anne Marie Bennett is a freelance writer, self-
taught artist and SoulCollage® facilitator who trained with Seena Frost. Her background is elementary education, computer software training, writing, and mixed media art. She
lives, laughs, writes, and sings (and makes her own SoulCollage® cards!) in Beverly, MA. More of Anne Marie's cards/interpretations are available on her blog, Inner Surprises.

Happy Accidents
While Making SoulCollage Cards

Have you ever had an "accident" happen when you make a SoulCollage card?

Has a picture ever slipped?

Have you ever ripped an image when you were trying to glue it?

Or has there ever been a bit of text that you just couldn't cover up easily?

I have learnt that by "letting go" and letting it happen however it is "meant to" that the messages I have received have gone deeper than the messages I would have gotten if I had succumbed to my need to "control" my card making processes and tried to fix the "mistake"

In my card called "Hurts So Bad" (left), the head of the man with the megaphone ripped off accidentally as I was gluing it down. I made this card after the suicide of a workmate and this ripped-off head came to represent my conflicting anger, sadness and helplessness.  This ripped-off head helped me to acknowledge the confusing emotions I was experiencing and also to begin to express myself more clearly. Some of the statements about this figure include:

  • "I am the one yelling to try and get someone's attention and help them.  I am the one who hurts so much I feel like I could "explode"
  • I am the one who is sick of trying so hard with no result. I feel helpless.  I've been yelling so hard my head flew off!!  But all that effort to no avail.
  • I am the one who is now angry!  I'm yelling my head off! I'm angry that you can't hear me.  I'm angry at the wasted lives of the depressed.

This accidental rip really helped me tap into and express some powerful emotions that I don't think I would have gotten to if this "happy accident" hadn't occurred.

Another example can be seen on my "Vulnerability" card where a "ball" of glue got trapped under the image leaving an unsightly mark on my image right on the throat of the central figure. This taught me a very important message about expressing myself.

This "mistake" has drawn my attention to my throat, and my issues with feeling vulnerable and scared of communicating exactly what I think for fear of being rejected.  It has also helped me to see that part of being authentic is putting myself out there, whether I am "perfect" or not.  Both of these are key issues for me in being vulnerable AND true to myself!!!!!

For me, learning to let go and see what happens in my SoulCollage cards has taught me lessons that reach further than just my SoulCollage deck.  I am learning to let go of the need to control all aspects of my life.  I'm learning to wait and see what happens and enjoy the gifts that "happy accidents" bring into my life that wouldn't be there if everything was perfectly planned in advance.

So the next time you have an "accident" while making a SoulCollage card, I dare you to not try and fix it, and instead... see what lesson you can learn from this unexpected gift.
