Soul Singing with Anne Marie

Hi!  I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage®  facilitator in Massachusetts.  If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage, this column is especially for you.

    Julianna and Me

Meet my inner child, Julianna! I made this SoulCollage card to honor her.  She is the youngest, most innocent, purest, most joyful part of me. She is the one who loves to play, sing, dance, have fun and let loose. She is the one who is clearly only in the present moment.

I found it helpful to give her a name.  You might want to try this too.  I find that my day is much lighter and free of confusion, fear and self-doubt if I check in with Julianna several times a day: "How are you doing, dear?  What's going on with you? How are you feeling?  What do you need?  Can I get you anything?"

As I work on re-parenting her now, the way I wish I'd been parented when I was her age, I find myself growing slowly and surely into the woman I long to be.

Here are some recommended resources for working with your own inner child:

Recovery of Your Inner Child, by Lucia Capacchione.  An amazing book by one of my favorite self-help authors.  There are lots of beautiful ideas here if you're curious about meeting your inner child and getting to know him/her better.

Inner Bonding: Becoming a Loving Adult to Your Inner Child, by Margaret Paul. Exactly what the title says!

Anne Marie Bennett is a freelance writer, self- taught artist and SoulCollage® facilitator who trained with Seena Frost. Her background is elementary education, computer software training, writing, and mixed media art. She lives, laughs, writes, and sings (and makes her own SoulCollage® cards!) in Beverly, MA. More of Anne Marie's cards/interpretations are available on her blog, Inner Surprises.

Soul Symphonies with Karen
My name is Karen Mann and I'm a SoulCollage® facilitator from Melbourne, Australia. This column is for those of you who have already made some cards & are ready to discover the symphony of voices inside of you and around you.

The Happy Inner Child

The "happy child" is a card that SeenaFrost (author of the SoulCollage® book) recommends beincluded as part of every SoulCollager's Committee Suit. Everyone, no matter where and how you wereraised, has a happy inner child voice.  This part is innocent and whole, loved andsecure, joyful and contented.

Some of us may not have many memories ofbeing a happy child, but I believe that we all did begin life as an innocentand happy child.  Rachel Carson wrote: "A child's world is fresh and new andbeautiful, full of wonder and excitement. It is our misfortune that for most ofus that clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful andawe-inspiring is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood."

While I have made cards that represent mydifficult childhood experiences, including the "broken child" and "the childwho always put on a happy face," I believe that deep inside I still have theremnants of my "happy child."  Whetheryour childhood was idyllic or challenging, we all did begin life "full of wonderand excitement."

The purpose of having a "happy child" SoulCollage card is to remind ourselves that somewhere inside us (and it may be deeplyhidden), there still is a childlike part of us that is an innately filled with aweand enchanted by the beauty that surrounds us. The aim of the happy child card is not to heal a 'broken' or 'damaged'part of self, but rather it is a reminder that there is already a "happy child"that exists inside you, and that you can reconnect with whenever you choose.

Initially I found it difficult to truly tapinto my happy child. She started out still feeling scared and like she didn'tknow properly how to connect with her own childlike delight.  She certainly needed lots of coaxing toconnect with that sense of wonder and enchantment.

My happy child started out nervously saying: I am the one who has permission to besmall and delicate and cherished.  Iwant you to care for yourself in a way that assists you to be truly happy.  Through nurturing yourself you can find aninner sense of calm, peace and contentment.

For me, part of the process of connectingwith my happy child involves making her feel safe and cherished, inspired andexcited.  So by following my happychild's advice, I include nurturing things in my life, and make an effort toremember and include activities that I enjoyed as a child.  These nurturing things include: walking on the beach, reading abook in the sun, taking bubble baths, cutting and pasting and collaging, singing out loud, flying a kite, making daisy chains... etc.

My happy child now feels nurturedsecure and willing to once again view the world with a positive and excitedoutlook.  Now I can easily connect withmy happy child and, whenever things feel too serious or heavy, I can arrange a playdate with her.  She really can shift myperspective and reinvigorate my sense of fun and enchantment.  She now says: Swing your feet to and fro and enjoy the feeling of freedom and thefun of playing.  Embrace pretty things, nice textures, and the fun of being you.

I encourage you to follow Seena Frost'sadvice and make yourself a happy child card for your deck.  Then make a list of things s/helikes to do. Choose to make engaging in thesechildhood activities a high priority.  Allow your happy child to assist you to live a life filled withjoy and wonder, because as I read on a greeting card the other day, "Where is it written that life is supposedto be serious?"
