Soul Singing with Anne Marie

Hi!  I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage®  facilitator in Massachusetts.  If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage, this column is especially for you.

Suggestions for newcomers to SoulCollage:
  • Find a SoulCollage Facilitator near you.

  • Download the Getting Started with SoulCollage
    Workshop in a Box

  • Visit KaleidoSoul and click on What is SoulCollage, SoulCollage Deck, and Making the Cards on the left menu.

  • Seena Frost is the one who created SoulCollage®. Visit Seena's website and see what four cards come up for you in the automatic reading, then read some of Seena's articles.

  • Read Seena's book, SoulCollage.
  • Listen to Seena's CD, Introduction to SoulCollage.
  • Don't forget to take it easy and always, always trust the process!

    Negative Nancy

The very first inner shadow part I worked with was Negative Nancy (see last card in column to right).  Her voice came up in some therapy sessions a few years ago, and I wanted to create a card to honor her.

I created the card intentionally, but even so, I was amazed at how much I learned from it after I'd made it.  And just the process of gathering images to express this shadowy part of myself was a learning experience for me.

However, the biggest lesson for me came when I showed the card to my therapist, and she led me through an inner dialog with this inner voice.  I could really feel all of Negative Nancy's pessimistic energy in my body. I could actually hear everything she'd ever told me about myself, about my life, my choices, my ideas.

And I realized that it wasn't me.

Our darker, shadowy parts are parts of us that we have often disowned, parts that we are not too proud of.  But that's just it. They are only parts of us.

So in your work with your darker voices, remember that there are many other parts of you that shine like the sun.  And remember that each one (each and every one) brings gifts to your inner and outer worlds.

Anne Marie Bennett is a freelance writer, self- taught artist and SoulCollage® facilitator who trained with Seena Frost. Her background is elementary education, computer software training, writing, and mixed media art. She lives, laughs, writes, and sings (and makes her own SoulCollage® cards!) in Beverly, MA. More of Anne Marie's cards/interpretations are available on her blog, Inner Surprises.

    Please read more about
    upcoming workshops/retreats with Anne Marie.

Soul Symphonies with Karen

Our Shadowed Neters
Need a Support Team

When dealing with a shadowed Neter, Seena Frost, author of the SoulCollage book, explains that "Each voice has a history...and at some level, each truly wants to assist you. The styles they use may be counterproductive for your present life, but after you have recognized them you can study these negative styles & enlist some other committee members to help modify them."

Our aim is not to 'fix' or 'vanquish' a shadowed aspect, rather it is to acknowledge this aspect of self and get to know it, understanding where this aspect came from and how it is trying to help you.

It is important to be aware that the methods engaged by a Neter did help you to survive at some stage in your life, but now those methods are no longer useful.  For example, if as a child your dad sent you to your room when you made too much noise, you may have learnt to be very quiet all of the time so as to not anger him.  As an adult however, being too quiet may mean you are missing out on lots of opportunities like job promotions, meeting a life partner... etc.

By building up a support team of helpful Neters, a shadowed aspect can be nurtured and assisted, as opposed to repaired or banished.
An example of one of my shadowed cards is called "I will do anything to be loved".  (I chose this card partly because it contains the tin woodman from the Wizard of Oz as a contribution to the discussions on the KaleidoSoul Yahoo Group about fairytales and myth).

This Neter says to me: I am the one who will do anything to be loved.  I never can trust that I will be loved just for who I am.  I don't feel good enough to be loved just as myself.  I will hide my true self in dark corners if this means you can't see my faults and therefore you'll love me.  I'll chop off a part of my body if this means you'll care for me (apparently the tin woodman became tin after a wicked witch cursed his axe so it kept chopping off parts of his body and then got them replaced by tin replicas).  I will be as perfect as possible, because that way you MUST love me.

This shadowed Neter of mine shows a deficit in feeling as though it deserves to be loved exactly for who it is. Its unhealthful tendancies are to do things in order to attract love, rather than to be true to myself.

Seena Frost suggests that we recruit some other Committee members to assist and modify (but not obliterate) a shadowed Neter.
Some of my other Neters that help me regulate and care for this Neter include:

1. "The One Who is Enough," who asserts that I am good enough just as I am.

2. My heart chakra Companion "Butterfly," who reminds me that I don't have to be perfect in order to be worthy of being loved.
3. "Ability to Shine," who assures me that a lot of times I can and do shine my light brightly and let everyone see how fabulous I truly am.
4. "Fearless," who reminds me that I am the one who is not scared about being alone.
5. "Self Nurturing," who says helps me to care for and nurtures myself.

6. "Self Protection," who helps by being "the one who lets you know when it is truly safe to be your authentic self"

Now that I am aware of what a big issue it is for me to be scared about not being good/deserving enough, I am working to support, care for and slowly modify this shadowed Neter.  Now when I begin to feel desperate for love, my heart chakra companion reminds me I can be loved just as I am... etc.

As you come across some of your own shadowy Neters, remember not to focus so much on 'fixing' a 'broken' Neter, but instead, begin searching though your other Neters for a support team who can assist you to slowly modify your reactions, thought patterns and behaviours.
