    Life's Many Journeys

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago, I was initially in shock. There was so much to think about, so many feelings to process, and several decisions that needed to be made quickly. My mind was whirling and I was feeling disoriented, confused and frightened.

A friend of mine who had recently been through breast cancer treatments listened and understood.  She told me her own breast cancer story and as she was doing so she referred to it as a journey.

I grasped onto that word/concept the way a drowning woman clings to a raft.  Thinking of my breast cancer diagnosis in light of the word "journey' helped me to reframe what I was going through in a more positive, helpful way.  It helped me through the landmines of surgeries and treatments because I knew it was a journey.  Not a devastating black hole of fear and worry and physical challenges, but a journey.

Think of something that you are going through right now, something that might be difficult, challenging, or scary in some way.  What happens if you see it as a Journey instead?

Journey of Synchronicity

This story is about my 'journey' to attend the SoulCollage Facilitators Training in 2004.  I was away from home (Melbourne,Australia) on my first overseas trip.  Prior to attending the training with Seena B Frost in Santa Cruz, I made a detour to a town called Cambria, California, to attend an appointment with Lucia Capacchione, an Art Therapist & author that I admired.
After this visit, I was planning to travel north toSanta Cruz to attend the SoulCollage Facilitator's Training.

Unfortunately I learnt that there was not any public transport that could take me directly north toSanta Cruz.  To get toSanta Cruz I needed to go south before I could catch a Greyhound bus that did go north.  To get to the Greyhound depot in time, I was going to have to catch the 6.30 a.m. local bus.  As I'm not a 'morning person' I decided to asked around at the hostel where I was staying to see if any one could give me a lift north.  I had no luck in finding anyone who was traveling north, so I figured that (although it didn't make any logical sense) there must be some 'reason' that I needed to go south before I could go north.

The night before my early morning departure I started chatting with a guy at the hostel who was traveling with his girlfriend.  He offered me a lift to the Greyhound the next morning (which meant I did not have to catch the 6.30am bus).  I gratefully accepted his offer.  We chatted for a while, and I told him about my visit to see Lucia Capacchione, as well as the SoulCollage training I was to be attending.

The next morning over breakfast, his girlfriend asked me about my art work & SoulCollage.  It turned out she was an artist who had been working with kids in disadvantaged schools, running an art program with them.  As we started chatting, she realised that I was fromMelbourne and that I had done some study in Art Therapy, which reminded her that someone she knew when she was at high school in India had talked about studying art therapy inAustralia.  Perhaps I knew her?  (How many times as a traveller do you hear that question?)

Anyway, can you believe it?  I did know her old school friend! (I'd only met her couple of times, but recently I'd run into her again at my new workplace).  From a chance meeting inCalifornia I was able to put these two school friends back in touch with each other.  But this is not where the synchronicity ends!

Upon my return toMelbourne I spoke to this lost school pal and passed on the contact details of my new acquaintance.  When she asked what I was doing in the States. I mentioned that I met with Lucia Capacchione, (thinking that as an Art Therapist she may have heard of her). She had heard of Lucia. In fact, she had used some of her techniques and referred to some of her work in her Master's thesis!

We had lunch to chat about Lucia and SoulCollage and her Master's thesis, and I showed her my SoulCollage cards and she became an instant convert!  I also learnt that my new friend lived only a couple of blocks away from me!
What an amazing way for me to connect with someone who works in my building but who I may never have spoken to.  We are now firm friends who speak regularly and who share a love of SoulCollage.
This twist of events was something that I could never have planned or foreseen.  By 'trusting' and 'going with the flow', rather than trying to 'make things happen' in a 'logical' manner, I experienced an amazing sequence of synchronicities that has changed the course of my life forever.

I now have a new friend and have shared my love of SoulCollage with her.
Through this experience I learnt the power of letting go of expectations about how things 'should' happen and letting events take their own course.

This journey taught me a huge life lesson, that I now apply to many aspects of my life, including making SoulCollage cards.  I now enjoy making cards without having a preconceived idea of what the card may be about or look like.  I enjoy witnessing what 'going with the flow' has to share with me.  I have learnt to be less of a 'control freak' and more of a 'let's see where this takes us' kind of person.  What a wonderful way to live life and to make SoulCollage cards.
