Integrating the Practice of SoulCollage?
Into Our Daily Lives

You're Bigger Than They Are

Kindred Spirits Member NewsWhen my beloved 16 year old Sasha was only a kitten, I struggled with those days when it was time to cut her claws. Armed with a pair of fingernail clippers, I proceeded so cautiously, fearful of injuring her. What always ensued was a tussle, a struggle, a skirmish, a veritable melee: me and the kitten, and the kitten always won. Sasha always managed to squirm away, and her claws thus kept growing longer and sharper. Ouch.

Several months into these failed, fearful attempts at claw-snipping, we went to the vet for Sasha's yearly check-up. Dr. Friedman commented on how long her claws were, so I proceeded to tell him how hard it was for me to cut them. "She's always squirming around," I whined. "And I'm afraid of hurting her. She just won't sit still, and then she runs away from me."

Even though this was 16 years ago, I remember our kind vet's response to this day. He stopped me in midsentence, put his hand up, palm facing me like a stop sign and said, "I think you're forgetting something. You're bigger than she is."

His words stopped my self-defeating thoughts right in their grooved tracks. Could it possibly be that simple? I am bigger than she is. I can hold her still, and I do, to this day. Claw-trimming time became a time of loving and cuddling, and she did sit still for that (also, a treat or two didn't hurt!).

And as I think about this story, I think that maybe it can be like this in my Inner World as well. Oftentimes, I hear myself whining and complaining that certain inner voices (Queen Puritanica, the Overeaters, Ethel my Inner Critic...etc.) have taken over again. And I feel helpless and out of control.

But now I'm thinking about this in light of Dr. Friedman's wisdom with my cat. Yes, I am certainly bigger than my little animal friends, but isn't it true that "I" am also bigger than each of my inner parts? Isn't it absolutely true that "I" am the one who is in charge? Me. ME! I am the one who decides what goes on inside of me in the long run, isn't it? So why do I let these darker inner voices sometimes get the better of me? Is it fear or just old habits?

Or is it basically that I've forgotten a very simple truth: I am bigger than they are.

And if "I" am not strong enough yet to really talk back to these very strong, very dark parts of myself, then maybe I can ask a different, brighter, stronger part of myself to converse with them instead. There are many wise, clear parts of my inner world who can do this: the wise one, the smart one, the good mother, and the priestess, to name a few. Try it yourself and see.

Ideas and Challenges to Spice Up
Your SoulCollage® Practice

Challenge of the Week

Choose an area of your life where a shadowy inner voice has "taken over." It could be Anger, or Fear, or something more specific like Overeating or Overspending.

Allow this part of you to "speak" to you, telling you exactly what it thinks and feels and wants and doesn't want. Don't hold it back. Truly, let it have its say. It's okay if you don't have a SoulCollage® card for this part of yourself yet, but you might want to consider creating one eventually.

Then flip through your Deck until you find a strong, bright, shining part of yourself (that maybe you've forgotten about).

Write a conversation between these two parts. Allow the bright part to say what needs to be said to the darker part.

Our Next Tele-Class

Eye of the Hawk SoulCollage® Reading, with Mili Ballard
SoulCollage® Facilitator and Facilitator Trainer in North Carolina

Mili will share a brief description of the transpersonal map of the psyche that includes the biographical, perinatal, and transpersonal levels of consciousness. Founded on the work of Stanislav Grof, transpersonal psychology purports that for sustainable healing to occur, all three levels of the psyche must be touched within the transformative process.

Mili will guide us through an "Eye of the Hawk" reading that incorporates these concepts to potentially expand our awareness, consciousness, and personal healing/growth via our own SoulCollage® decks.

Mili Ballard has been a SoulCollage® facilitator since May 2005 and a SoulCollage® facilitator trainer since February 2007. Mili is a training consultant within business and industry and also focuses on assisting individuals involved in their own processes of personal transformation. Mili and her life partner Johnny Dillard, also a trained SoulCollage® facilitator, co-lead "Just" Blank Cards, their private practice focusing on using the communicative power of images to enhance relationships with self and othersPlease visit Mili's website, SoulCollager's Respite.

MUSEologies - Fabulous blog (not related to Jill's work). There's lots of rich imagery here, and inspiring writing on many topics about living creatively and authentically. "One of the Great Secrets of MUSEologies is that we are all Muses to someone...some where...some time...when we least expect it yet we may be totally unaware of our influence."

Root Chakra Class - Longing to learn more about the chakras? In this 2 part tele-class, SoulCollage® Facilitator Jenni Holloway will guide us through the realm of the Root Chakra with group discussions, journaling exercises and guided visualization. Devote the month of February to healing, strengthening & celebrating the essence of your Earth Being. I highly recommend this as a positive, fun, deep resource for anyone wanting to work with the Companions Suit.

The Blind Side, featuring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw. I saw this movie a few weeks ago. The theatre was packed, and when it was over, not one person got up to leave during the ending credits. I consider that a compliment in and of itself (personally, I've never seen that happen before, ever). For me, I just wanted to sit still and absorb the powerful story for a few more moments before going back out into the real world. One person can change another's life, with the power of love and compassion. This is based on the true story of Leigh Anne and Sean Touhey, who took in Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick. Highly recommend. In American theatres now.
Soul Nourishment - SPECIAL OFFERING

Everyone Is Beautiful, by Katherine Center. Here's a beautiful keeper of a novel! I picked this up because of the title since this is something that I very strongly believe. And I was both delighted and amazed at the tender touch of this author. The story focuses on slightly overweight Laini who is a thirty-something mother of three boys under the age of 4. It is about mothering and family, but it is also about listening inside to follow your passion, which she does even though it's really hard to find the time and energy. Some of the scenes with her children made me laugh right out loud. Every character is very real, like they could be my own friends and neighbors. Enjoy!

Art Escapes, by Dory Kanter. Daily exercises and inspirations for discovering greater creativity and artistic confidence. This beautiful large-sized book is spiral bound so it's easy and practical to use. Divided into topics: Assemble Your Supplies for Creativity, Have Fun and Keep It Simple, Opportunities for Everyday Creative Moments, Putting It All into Perspective, Art Assemblage, Collage and Other Inspiring Ideas, Let's Go Outside and Paint.

The Scent of God: A Memoir, by Beryl Singleton Bissell. A beautifully written true story of one girl/woman's movement into a convent and out again, the tension between her love for God and for the humans in her life. Said one reviewer: "Reading this story, you come to realize that the book itself is about faith, about trusting in what we can't possibly understand, surrendering to what life gives us and recognizing that even the most unbearable moments are gifts.... You find God's grace swirling around inside every contradiction."

The Sea Is So Wide and My Boat Is So Small, by Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund. Marian challenges all of us in this book, to end the ongoing physical and spiritual poverty afflicting millions of our children. She inspires us with ways to leave our children with a better, safer, and fairer world, but WE have to be the ones to care enough. Now. All royalties for this book are donated to the Children's Defense Fund.
