Soul Symphonies with Karen |

My name is Karen Mann and I'm a SoulCollage®
facilitator from Melbourne, Australia. This column is for
those of you who have already made some cards & are
ready to discover the symphony of voices inside of you
and around you.
Broken Child
My "wounded child" aspect was so wounded and such an
overbearing member of my Committee Suit that she saw
herself as not just "wounded," but actually proclaimed
herself as "broken."

I am the one who is broken. I am the one who was not
wanted. I am the child who was rejected and was never
enough. I am the child who was crying out for love &
affection. I am the one who wants to know how to put the
pieces back together again.
When I made this card I had seen the main image of the
child a number of times and had not picked it up in an
effort to avoid working with this part of self that was
in so much pain. I recognized my "broken child" as the
one who was sad, scared of rejection, had little self
esteem, and felt everything very intensely. This pain
felt overwhelming and all consuming. Avoidance was a
coping technique I had definitely used in the past to
avoid the pain, and I nearly used it again by trying to
ignore this picture that had touched something in me.
Eventually I did trust my intuition and went back for that
image. Then I even got brave enough to make this card,
and am really glad that I did as it really was a great
way to learn more about this aspect and how to help her.
One great thing I learnt about my "broken child" is that
she is
just one part of me. For many years I had
been doing therapy and personal development work to heal
myself, and stop feeling so much pain and constant
rejection. I couldn’t explain where the pain came from
or why I was so scared of rejection, it just was a
"fact" and that was that.
In the SoulCollage book Seena Frost, says: "When you
make a card for a so-called "negative" part it will give
you a new perspective. Now you can see it as one
piece of you and not as your whole being... You
can now listen to it more objectively as you learn from
where in your history it originated and for what
purpose. You learn what it is afraid of and why it feels
and acts the way it does." (pg 14-15)
After making this card and journaling with it I learnt
about where the "broken child" came from, but in the end
this wasn’t anywhere near as important as the sense of
control I regained by realizing she was only one part of
me (albeit a loud, bossy, scared part of me). I no
longer viewed
myself as "broken," but rather that I had an
aspect
that felt like a "broken child." This felt much more
bearable and like I could cope with just a broken part,
rather than being totally broken. I could see that my
"fearless self" and my "grounded self" and my "happy
child" and my "grateful self" and many other aspects
could work together with this "broken child" and help
her when things felt overwhelming or too painful.
Seena Frost goes on to say: "When you find a powerful
image and create a card, you are doing healing
therapeutic work. Often the troublesome part quiets down
and takes a more appropriate place on your Committee"
(pg 16). This was definitely the case for me. The
initial journaling was painful and completed through
tears leaving me very exhausted by my experience of
exploring this aspect of myself.
The next time I drew this card in a reading however, I was
not sure if I could cope with the emotional outpourings
of this aspect, when to my surprise, the sentiments were
much less intense and much more balanced. In fact, I’m
almost tempted to rename her as "wounded" rather than
"broken" and she now seems to have been hurt a bit in
the past, but is healing, rather than smashed to pieces
and beyond repair. What an amazing turn around- one I
never could have imagined a little while back.

from our readers in each issue.
Each card below is one SoulCollager's expression of Wounded
Child.

Wounded Child
Linda
New York
I am the one who has been beaten down and ripped apart.
I am the one who thinks that I am damaged goods. I am
the one who has been robbed of my innocence. I am the
one who is rough around the edges, but tender inside.

Unnecessary Death
Allison
Oregon
I am the one who is misunderstood and willful. I don't
know where I belong. I am the one who is not alone and
is protected.

Abandoned Child
Marti
Illinois
I Am the One Who Lives all alone in a wintry landscape,
Chilled to the bone with fear, Waking to the terrors of
the night, Knowing my cries will be unheeded and
unheard. After all, aren't I supposed to be the grown-up
girl?

Dejected Child
Judith
Maryland
I am the one who is forgotten; yet I am ever present.
Even though I am out of sight, I am never far behind. I
feel a kinship with the clouds, who, when they are heavy
laden, release the rainstorm. Be watchful while you
play. My tears can drown your masquerade. I am sad
because I want to be included. I want your love and
attention. I long for the security of your warm embrace.
