Quotation of the Week

I don't believe in aging. I believe in forever altering one's aspect to the sun. Hence my optimism.

For as long as I can remember, I have been creating art. My love of fiber and color has always been strong and led me in many beautiful ways. For 28 years I was a handweaver, creating and selling my work up and down the east coast at high-end craft shows. Slowly I moved from that form to doing fibercollage with mixed media: framed wall art embellished with beads, shells, objects made of polymer clay, and other natural objects. This work has always been very spiritual, as I try to express my understanding of Mystery. It has been a large part of my soul-work this lifetime.

Although I was not searching for any new medium to play with, one day (while paging through a catalog) I noticed a class for something called SoulCollage®. I was intrigued and signed up for a class with Anne Marie. Immediately I knew this was for me. I fell in love with my cards and many seemed to pour right out of me. I loved the form and the structure of the whole process. When I decided to do the Facilitator Training, I knew that I could teach this form. In 2004, I had built a straw-bale Studio/Sanctuary, and I would use that for my classes.

My experience teaching this modality, is that people are hungry for soul-work that is textural, sensorial, and a bit mysterious. There is just enough structure, and much freedom. I stress that there are no rules, and give people lots of freedom to explore and express themselves. The I Am The One Who... exercise offers a window into what might otherwise be an unknown.

My students return time and again. They, too, feel the value and depth of this work. It has helped open up hidden places, unlocked trauma and released it, expressed grief, enabled growth through humor, and much more. Students are delighted, amazed, magnetized, reverent, moved, and hungry for more.

It is my pleasure and honor to hold space for this work to be done, both my own and that of others.

Here are a few of my favorite SoulCollage® cards:

Innocence

In October 2008 I fell head first off of a second story deck and broke both wrists and my neck. With the intention of releasing some trauma locked in my cells around the fall, I started cranial-sacral treatments a few months later. On the table I experienced that I was not victim of the accident, but that I was innocent.

I am the one who is innocent. I am the one who is open. I am the one who is clear as water. I am the one who can welcome all kinds of experience with wonder. I am the one who can transform and grow. I am the one who receives my life.

Freedom

I am the one who finds great freedom in growing old. I am the one who finds joy in releasing my worry, my concern as I age. I am the one who loves my hands with a passion. I am the one who uses my hands to express my freedom, my joy, myself.

Ideas and Challenges to Spice Up
Your SoulCollage® Practice

Idea of the Week

Close One Eye

Our idea this week is borrowed from Suzie Wolfer's fr*ee monthly newsletter, SoulCollage® Inspirations, which I encourage you to subscribe to.

Try this at home. What you'll need:

  1. Your journal
  2. A pen
  3. Something to cover one eye with like an eye patch, or just a silk scarf covering one eye
  4. Your SoulCollage® cards
The Process
  • Select one card at random
  • Select your favorite card
  • Cover your right eye and write down what your card says starting with the words "I Am the One Who..."
  • Then immediately cover your left eye and repeat the same reading, letting go of expectations and deeply listening to the other brain hemisphere speaking to you through your SoulCollage® card
  • Next do a third reading with both eyes viewing the card and just notice what you feel in your body
  • Repeat with the second card
  • For a bonus, ask your cards a question that engages them in a dialogue with each other. For example, "What could I be doing to better support you?" And do this with one eye covered each time and be prepared to receive some surprises.

Sapphire Night, by Tapestry. The music of Hildegard von Bingen. Amazing collection of vocal music by the Boston based vocal group. They perform music by Hildegard von Bingen as well as music written in the Hildegard style by modern composer Patricia Van Ness. This collection is well sung and evokes a feeling of mystery, awe, and relaxation.
Soul Nourishment - Books

Wide Open: Inspiration and Techniques for Art Journaling on the Edge, by Randi Feuerhelm-Watts. This is an amazing creativity notebook complete with a deck of cards that are full of juicy ideas to get you going on art journaling in many forms. Lots of cool ideas that can be transferred over to SoulCollage® card creation too!

Making Rounds with Oscar, by David Dosa, M.D. The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat. This is the story of an unusual cat, the patients he serves, their caregivers, and one doctor who learned how to listen. Heartfelt, inspiring, and full of humor and pathos, this book allows us to take a walk into a world rarely seen from the outside, a world (of death and dying) that we often misunderstand.

The Spirited Walker, by Carolyn Scott Kortge. I used this book as my bible several years ago when I was beginning to make physical activity an integral part of my life. It was helpful to me because the author speaks about walking, not just in terms of physical fitness, but also brings spirituality and emotional clarity into the picture. I still use some of the "mind work" she suggests in this book whenever I go walking now.
