Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

My First Sacred Place Card

It may surprise some of you to know that we place cards representing sacred places in the Community Suit. Usually, we think of the Community Suit as being full of people we have known and loved through the years, as well as beloved pets who have touched our lives.

When I was just starting out as a Facilitator in 2005, I asked Seena Frost about this. Seena was the creator of SoulCollage® and author of SoulCollage® Evolving, here is what she said:

“Early in my collecting of ideas for the Neter Card suits (that was before the name became the SoulCollage® process) I was at a favorite place of mine, Tassajara Hot Springs. I realized I wanted a card for this sacred place, and not just for the Buddhist teachers there. So, where should such places go in a deck? A suit of their own? This could get unwieldy. No, best to put them in with special people, the Community suit. In a way, they have special energies much like a person. And I could put a person on the card too, but mainly the place is actually the Neter.”

The very first "sacred place" card I made is for Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in western Massachusetts. I first attended a retreat there in the 80’s and have been going there for rest, renewal and inspiration ever since. I don’t know how to explain it, but from the very first time I stepped through the doors, I felt at home there. I still feel that way, 35 years later, even though the buildings have undergone many changes and renovations, and the leadership has changed several times as well. I have experienced much spiritual and personal inner growth within Kripalu’s walls and my heart simply sings whenever I plan another visit!

I invite you this month to take some quiet time and look back on your own life. Identify some of your sacred places over the years; listen to what wisdom they have to share with you. Make a card to give image to at least one of them. Then journal with it. Listen to its story, its particular wisdom.

Anne Marie Bennett is a SoulCollage® Facilitator / Trainer, published author, website goddess, and two-time cancer survivor who was mentored directly by Seena Frost. In 2005, she fell in love with SoulCollage® and was inspired to use her professional experience along with web technology as a means to serve the world by putting SoulCollage® "out there" in a really big way with KaleidoSoul. Anne Marie lives in eastern Massachusetts with her middle-aged husband and two adolescent felines who keep them hopping. Anne Marie’s books about SoulCollage® are available here.

Guest Columnist: Linda Woolfson

I’m Linda Woolfson, MA, PhD, SoulCollage® Trainer & Facilitator, writer, translator and creativity catalyst. As someone who has lived in several countries I have become increasingly fascinated with the power of places to help me fine-tune my sense of presence in the world.

PLACING PLACES IN YOUR SOULCOLLAGE® DECK

Way back in our early history as a species, we were nomads. Dependent on our senses and our instincts for survival, we wandered in search of suitable land for shelter, water, hunting and other sources of food. When we found what we were seeking, we settled for a while, moving on when supplies became scarce. We had a visceral response to our environment, sensing where we were likely to thrive and where not.

Sadly, in our era of globalization many of us live our lives in what anthropologist Marc Augé has called “non-places” – the anonymous shopping malls, airports, highways and computer screens which look the same all over the world. Yet still we are drawn to the power of special places. Perhaps they attune us to those long-forgotten times when our capacity to read and understand our surroundings enabled us to survive.

Special places can touch us as deeply as special people. So it’s no surprise that in the early years of developing SoulCollage®, Seena Frost noticed an urge in many people to create cards for the “power spots” that were “high in energy for them.” Seena suggested that cards to honor special places in our lives might belong in our Community suit:

“These ‘place cards’ would not be general cards for trees or mountains, but would be for a special tree or spot on a mountain that you love to visit. It could be a bench or a place you sit to meditate. It could be your childhood room, or a special and specific place at a vacation spot that has precious memories.” (Seena Frost, SoulCollage® Evolving p. 35)
I have several such cards in my own deck. While our dog Bonnie was still alive, most mornings she and I would walk across the fields and through the pine woods to the Roman ruins close to where we live. This area is particularly vibrant in the springtime, when the air is filled with the coconut scent of the gorse bushes in flower. There are masses of gorse bushes, yet one particular bush growing right on our route always caught my attention. I used to pause, stand in front of it and invite it to help me start my day. In my imagination, I would travel down into the gorse roots, then up through its branches and into the sky above.

I call this Neter Grace the Gorse Bush and it says to me I am one who reminds you that you, like me, are a being rooted in Earth and reaching into Sky. I teach you how to tune in to the new day. I show you how to honor and celebrate your unique place in this world.

Like many people in the 21st century I have lived in several countries and currently lead a dual-based life between Portugal and the UK. SoulCollage® gives me a vehicle to express what the different countries I have lived in mean to me. These countries (South Africa, the UK, France, Portugal and the USA) are indeed like the important people in my life – mentors, challengers and guides who play a distinct role in helping me to evolve. Here is my card for Portugal.

I am one who re-roots you as an adult in the sun and sensuality of your South African childhood. I am one who brings you joy through sunny days, citrus scents carried on sea-breezes, wild oceans and forests, human nature still in harmony with the elements. I encourage you to be aware of stillness beneath sounds. I support you in finding access to the deeper layers and patterning of your life.

Creating “place cards” for our Community suit is a richly enjoyable activity. Like other Community cards, they invite us to bring our own photos and art-work into our deck.

Making Community cards to honor our personal special places is one way that SoulCollage® can tune us in to what the Romans called the “genius loci” – the uniquely individual spirit and energy of special places. As Linda Lappin says in her wonderful book The Soul of Place,
“Today we might say that the genius loci is a form of intelligence operating within the environment in synergy with human beings.”
If you haven’t yet made any “place cards” start by looking through your whole deck and spotting all the places already present in your cards – what a joyful way to travel!

As promised, we are featuring SoulCollage® cards from our readers in each issue.

Each card below is a card from one SoulCollager's Deck that represents one of their own special sacred places.

Hildegard’s Cloister
Community Suit
Karen
Ohio

I am the place that cloistered the mystic Hildegard for 30 years. When first bricked inside my lifeless walls as a child, she despaired. I was her dark prison, an austere monastic chamber with only a small window to the outside. I became her contemplative refuge. I watched her bring Light and Spirit into this barren cubicle and manifest divine visions, illuminated manuscripts, and glorious music. She made me a sacred space, and I steeled her soul through deprivation and forged a future saint.

Upper Realm
Council Suit
Judy
Marblehead

I am the one who longs for the sacred, sees through the veils, and arrives in the mystery.

In Memory
Community Suit
Nicky
Australia

I am the one who is there for you to sit and reflect. I am the one who waits for you in moments of sadness. I am the one who grows each year taller, stronger in your memory. My gift to you is a place to come when you need to be near me.

Divine View
Community Suit
Andrea
Virginia

I am the one who lets your heart resonate with the sacredness of this place (Rome) and the memories you cherish. I connect you with a view on the Divine. I change your life forever.

Sacred Music
Committee & Council Suits
Maxine
Massachusetts

I am one who, with my feline companion, is drawn to sacred music and the one who plays it. I am one who sees and hears past cold, gray, treacherous mountains to the gentle, glittering song of the one who plays just for me. This is a place that transcends the mundane, hate, and ugliness, where beauty and luminosity reign. Trust in it. Join me here.

The Grand Canyon
Community Suit
Michele
Arizona

I am a place that welcomes you home to your authentic self. I see you shine in your enthusiasm and dedication to protect me. You always dive right in, no matter what adventure you seek. here.
