Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Who’s Residing in Your Heart?

As you may know, Seena Frost had a favorite suit. It’s the suit with which she began the SoulCollage® process- the Community Suit. This is the suit that honors people, pets, and places that have touched, enriched, and/or challenged our lives, past and present. It is the suit that represents the relational dimension within our decks.

I once heard Seena say that the Community Suit is for “people who have taken up residence in your heart.” This really struck me as it conjures up a beautiful image of my heart- wide open and spacious, inhabited by the essences of those I’ve loved and who have loved me over the years, and even now. In my heart space I see places that I’ve met as holy ground, as well as pets who have nurtured me over the course of my life in their own unique and loving ways. I see teachers whom I’ve never met but whose work has touched my life and transformed me somehow. I see people I’ve loved who have died, and sometimes I even sense the essences of people I will know in the future . . . All of them there, together, residing in my heart.

When I first started SoulCollage® I focused on the Committee Suit- making and working with cards that represented my inner voices, my inner tribe, the psychological aspect of me. But over the years, slowly, bit by bit, I’ve been building my Community Suit. I’m glad I’ve intentionally worked on this because there is something very powerful and heart-expanding about drawing one of my Community cards in a reading. Their wisdom is there for me, right now in this moment, whether they have already passed on or even if they still live in the same house. Their message is relevant and helpful whether they are in animal form, human form, or the form of a sacred place that speaks to my soul.

In A Natural History of Love, Diane Ackerman said, “The heart is a living museum. In each of its galleries, no matter how narrow or dimly lit, preserved forever like wondrous diatoms, are our moments of loving, and being loved.”

Whether you are a new or experienced SoulCollager, I urge you to give conscious attention to the Community Suit of your deck. Spend some time in silence this week, exploring the galleries of your own heart, your own living museum of love. What moments of loving have been preserved in your heart’s galleries? What moments of being loved are etched forever in the residence of your heart? Do you have Community cards to honor these people, animals, and places which have graced your life with such love?

Put It Into Practice

If you don’t have a lot of Community cards yet, make a list of some people, pets and/or places which have brought you moments of loving and being loved. Commit to creating one Community card per month to add to your deck.

If you do have a lot of Community cards already, take them out of your deck and spread them all out around you in a circle, face up so you can see them all. Spend several minutes in silence, surrounded by your community. If you like, ask a question of the whole Community group and allow them to answer with “Our answer to your question is this...” Or perhaps one or two of them will clamor to respond to you. Allow the experience to soften and quiet your own heart this week.

In 2005, she fell in love with SoulCollage® and was inspired to use her professional experience along with Internet technology as a means to serve the world by putting SoulCollage® "out there" in a really big way with KaleidoSoul. Anne Marie lives in eastern Massachusetts with her middle-aged husband, an elderly dog and two adolescent felines who keep them all young. You can read more about how SoulCollage® assisted her on her cancer journey on her website SOS Cancer Journeys. Anne Marie's newest book, Through the Eyes of SoulCollage® is now available.

Our Ever-Expanding Community

The SoulCollage® Community Suit has provided me with many adventures (and new cards!) in the past year. Perhaps the most easily understood of the four suits, it offers some surprising opportunities to explore the external forces that influence our inner selves. We usually define Community Neters as sentient beings, present or historical, who have impacted our lives. They include the beings or groups to whom we would say “I wouldn’t be me without you.”

It is helpful to review our lives and inventory those who helped shape us, nurtured us, provided solace, or offered constructive challenges. Such reflections might inspire us to create cards honoring those souls. Community members can also lead us to important aspects of ourselves. We may identify which parts of us were shaped by a particular person or group. One of my first Community cards honors my uncles, each a crucial part of my upbringing. The card includes a laboratory bench, because one uncle gave me a chemistry set when I was young. I probably wouldn’t have become a scientist without his influence. Listening to my “Uncles” Community card led me to create a Council card for the Scientist archetype and, eventually, a Committee card for my scientist self.

Our Community suit may include people we’ve never met, whether ancestors, celebrities, historical figures, or even fictional characters. I have a single card that honors both Peter Dinklage (the actor) and Tyrion Lannister (my favorite Game of Thrones character). This Neter usually speaks from both perspectives, and always maintains a wicked sense of humor.

It can be revealing to make a list of cultural and social icons that have influenced us in various stages of our lives. I have Community cards for authors, activists, politicians, disadvantaged groups, performers, and others. Sometimes their role in my journey is obvious, sometimes it is powerful but undefined. Linda Ronstadt’s influence on me wasn’t solidified until I had an unexpected chance to meet her. We were introduced, and I blurted out “I just want to say thanks. You got me through every heartbreak of my life.” Spontaneous clarity! That Neter encompasses not only the person, but what she sang and how she sang it. I am one who helped you turn wounds into wisdom, to stand strong and require respect from those who seek the solace of your heart.

For me, the Community suit is the perfect place to acknowledge cultural or organizational forces of import. In the past decade, I’ve increasingly relied on brilliant political satire (aka good journalism with humor) for sanity and comfort. In progress is a card for Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver, who each excel at this on television. Working on that card, I recalled that my mother introduced me as a child to the medicine of political satire. Indeed, my Community card “My Mother, My Friend” contains an image honoring our designated weekly viewing of Laugh-In on television. Plus, I have a Community card “Saturday Nights” that pays homage to the captivating hours provided by Saturday Night Live and Monty Python’s Flying Circus, hilarious satire from my college days.

SoulCollage® Mother, Seena Frost, encouraged us to include special places in the Community suit. She stressed that these should be very specific places, such as a certain tree or overlook or boulder we love to sit upon. There are many ways to consider, define and represent “place.” I believe Seena intended for us to identify and include places or physical spaces of deep and lasting meaning to us.

As time goes on, I’m making room for a broad spectrum of places, spaces and public experiences in my Community suit. For example, there are several pieces of art that have been touched my soul for decades. These images do not speak to me as inner parts or archetypal energies. They provide a sacred place for me; I stand transfixed and transformed in their presence. “Song of the Lark” (Jules Breton) is one such painting. It is displayed at The Art Institute of Chicago, one of my favorite places. Interestingly, actor Bill Murray claims that same painting saved his life on a depressing day early in his career. Art of any kind really is community, as it provides opportunities for collective and connective experiences.

Speaking of favorite places, I’m determined to honor public libraries in my Community suit. Not just one specific library, but the whole social and physical construct of them. Public libraries have been a constant in my life for over 50 years. They were a place of adventure when I was a child, and the only destination I was allowed to visit alone. I think my bicycle knew the route without guidance! Now, as I visit possible areas to relocate, I always check out the local library. For me, libraries are like siblings or cousins – essential members of my Community.

Ideas for you to ponder as you consider the Community suit:
  • Who can always make you laugh? A person, animal, performer, writer?
  • What person or group can you call on for emotional support at this time of your life? What about during earlier times of your life?
  • Is there a specific poet or musician that provides solace no matter your situation?
  • Whose books, articles, blogs or social media posts inspire or motivate you?
  • Is there an organization whose work you particularly admire?
  • Some places calm us, while others energize or inspire us. Is there a specific place, whether in nature or another setting, which serves as a treasured space for you?
  • Take some quiet time to consider what individuals or groups might say “I wouldn’t be me without you” to YOU. Who are the beings, organizations or places that you have impacted in an essential way? Are any of them represented in your Community cards?

We were the TV show that showed ordinary Americans living their lives in intimate detail. We found comedy and drama in the minutiae of daily life, bringing the baby boomer generation to vivid life on the screen. Watching our show was therapeutic, showing the audience that their problems were ones shared by all. We became a cultural phenomenon that people still talk about 30 years later. We deeply affected you.
