My barn having burned down,
I can now see the moon.
--- Zen Koan

The Bright Side of Illness

This December will be the 9th anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis.

It's been nine years but I still recall exactly where I was (at work), what time it was (5:45 pm), and who I was with (my kind coworker John, sitting to my left). I remember the exact words the doctor said as I sat stunned, holding the receiver in my left hand. "There are some cancerous cells in your left breast."

Talk about your barn burning down! Nine words from a doctor, and my whole life came to a screeching halt. The next seven months were occupied with surgeries, chemo treatments, wig shopping, support group meetings, and radiation sessions. Oh, and lots of long naps.

I hadn't heard of SoulCollage® when my own "barn burned down." And even though it was almost three years after my treatments were over before I participated in my first workshop, my heart was still longing for healing, and SoulCollage® was the full "moon" that shone its light on my trauma, my fear, my anger, and then finally... my own inner radiance.

The SoulCollage® cards I made around the theme of breast cancer can be seen on KaleidoSoul's breast cancer page.  Just hearing these inner voices through the process of SoulCollage® brought a fine, clean healing to my wounded soul and body. Giving image to these voices only served to intensify the healing. Dialoging with them and then finally accepting them was a bright blessing beyond belief.

The card I share with you here is my Survivor card. It is an archetype, a spirit guide. Whenever I see it I am reminded of the One who helped me to walk through the fire.

Yes, breast cancer was an insidious, unwelcome pyromaniac that wreaked havoc in my world. There were many days (even after the treatments were over) when I didn't want to get out of bed. And yes, it "burned down my barn" so to speak.

But there's a bright side even to something like this. With the "barn" down, I could now see "the moon." For me, this moon showed itself in a variety of ways: my husband's rock-solid support and love, the gift of eventually moving away from a job that was no longer serving me, a closer relationship with my oldest brother, a certain knowing that I was cherished by so many people, inspiration to write a book Bright Side of the Road, two new friends (also survivors) I met online who held my hand and talked me through the whole seven months, and my dear wise woman therapist Fran, who I would not have found if not for my diagnosis.

And this is what I now know for sure: there is nothing that can happen to you that is too big for healing. Nothing. If something happens (or has already happened) to you that feels like the end of the world, know this: you can get through it. You will get through it. And SoulCollage® will be the moon that shines its luminous light on your pain and brokenness. The practice of SoulCollage® will be the glue that puts your world back together.

Soul Symphonies with Karen

My name is Karen Mann and I'm a SoulCollage® facilitator from Melbourne, Australia. This column is for those of you who have already made some cards & are ready to discover the symphony of voices inside of you and around you.

Healing from Headaches

I have two names for this card (see below) which I made to explore a physical type of healing. I call it either Thank You for my Headaches or Power to Heal my Own Body.

I made this card during a time when headaches were an almost daily feature in my life. When I began making this card I was very angry and upset. I didn't want to be someone who experienced constant neck pain, headaches and regular migraines. I was really seeking answers about my health.

The resulting card taught me so much about why I got headaches and also how to heal them! Some of my writing with this card included:

I am the one who has a choice about getting headaches. If I look after myself properly I will not be unwell. My headaches are here to teach me to find balance in my life. I have a choice in this situation. I know how to heal myself! I can look at this positively, look after myself, and make the necessary changes in my life. I am NOT a victim. I can make changes that help myself.

Since making this card, the frequency of my headaches has greatly decreased. I now pay special attention when I get a headache. I look to see what is out of balance in my life, then take action to change the situation. My headaches now serve as warning signals for me.

After years of treating the "symptom" of the headache, I was now learning to treat the cause. I learned a new way of approaching my life and my health that I don't believe I would have been able to learn in any other way at that time.

Galileo said You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself. Through making SoulCollage® cards I have found a way to access healing answers for myself. I have found a way to connect with my intuitive healing wisdom and have also learned to care for myself in the unique way that I need.

Each card below is one SoulCollager's expression of illness.

Fist
Rhoda
Washington

I am the fist in your abdomen begging you to open me, release me. As long as you are afraid and need to be in control, I remain closed and cause you pain. The ring on my finger invites you to let go into your wholeness. Gently, gently now, open my fist, finger by finger, Releasing the rose within, So soft, so open. Feel the opening, feel the release. Feel your energy flowing. Feel your power.

Cancer
Mary
Massachusetts

I am the one who sneaks up on you. I am the one who takes all of you with me. I am the one who runs away, without guilt. I am the one who leaves your loved ones longing.

Ocean Swirl
Priscilla
Massachusetts

(This is the first card made after my lung cancer diagnosis.)

I am the one whose life has been turned upside down. I am the one who has been washed out to sea. I am the one who is drowning in questions and uncertainty. I am the one who knows the Holy Spirit is always with me. I am the one who knows I will be washed back to shore. I am the one who is glad I paid attention to how I was feeling and went to the doctor to see what was wrong. I am glad I'm starting this uncertainty from a place of health.

Green Angel
Priscilla
Massachusetts

I made this card after I was well into my treatments. It was number 22 in a series of 49 I made during my illness. I took several with me each time I went for my chemo treatments and did I Am the One Who... statements while the chemo was dripping into me.

I am the one who has a mighty green guardian angel. I am the one whose angel is guarding me and at the same time tromping on the cancer. I am the one whose angel is guided and strengthened by Wisdom. I am the one whose angel has a heart of gold. I am the one whose cancer is ugly, but weak. I am the one whose cancer seems to have the green of life, but it is a fake life—a life that brings destruction and therefore isn't life. I am the one whose green angel comes as a messenger of God. I am the one who will have cancer pushed into the dark abyss where it belongs. I am the one whose angel brings the promise of new life beyond this illness. I am the one who will be lifted into the light of God.

Please feel free to submit one of your cards for a future issue by sending a reply email to this newsletter.
