Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

The Changing of the Suits

I had been practicing SoulCollage® for less than a year when something strange happened during a journaling exercise with my Joyful Transition card. This was one of the first cards I had created and when I first worked with it, it was definitely a part of my Committee Suit of inner voices, also known as personality parts. I knew this for certain because it was speaking to me as if it were inside of me, telling me a bit about what Seena calls my “local story,” my personal history:

I Am the One Who is leaving something behind. I Am the One Who is excited about where I am going. I Am the One Who is all dressed up and celebrating this transition! I Am the One Who is moving into something new and exciting and different, and I Am the One Who can't wait to get there!

Yes, this Neter was definitely part of my Committee Suit, my “local story.” I felt good about this knowing. I knew even then that we can't always know the suit (or even the meaning) of a card right away, but this one felt very clear.

Then one day, several months later, I drew my Joyful Transition card in a daily reading and when I journaled with it, it was speaking very differently to me. Listen:

I Am the One Who leads you to new places and people and adventures. I Am the One Who safely guides you through the open doorways to your future. I Am the One Who wants you to follow me wherever I lead you, even if sometimes that means leaving colorful worlds behind for black-and-white territory.

Can you sense the difference in the two voices? For me, it was like the energy on this card was now a guide of sorts. She was talking to me about the Larger Story of my life. I heard her telling me about many different transitions on my life's journey, not just the one I had been going through when I made the card. As I heard this, it occurred to me that this was now the voice of a Council card.

Then, of course, the part of me who likes things to be all wrapped up in neat little packages got very upset. “No, no, no!” she hollered. “That's not right. This was a Committee card. How can it suddenly be a Council card?”

It seems that I was still operating under the assumption that once I had a card labeled nice and neatly, it would be pigeon-holed forever as such.

I was so perplexed and distressed by this change of events within my deck, that I emailed my friend and sister-Facilitator, Karen Mann in Australia. She had been making and working with cards much longer than I had, and I really respected her wisdom about all things to do with SoulCollage®.

What a relief when she emailed me back, saying it was a normal occurrence for our cards to change suits now and then. She told me not to worry about it, to just go with the flow of it and to trust the process, to trust myself. She said that not everything in SoulCollage® could be clearly categorized. Were truer words ever spoken? I think not.

It so happened that when I created the Joyful Transition card, I was right on the edge of a major life transition out of a customer service job I'd held and loved for 10 years and into a life of creating my own business. When I first dialogued with this Neter, it was telling me about that particular transition. But several months later, I was already “through the door” of that transition and immersed in the middle of life on the other side of it. When I dialogued with her at that point, she made the shift away from my local personal story (Committee Suit) and over to the larger story of my life (Council Suit).

This event stands out clearly in my mind now as a huge turning point in my SoulCollage® journey. After the “changing of the suits” by this one card, I was much better able to enjoy the mystery of the process and to let my expectations go completely.

Sometimes the cards don't just change suits; they change what they are “about.” This is because we are continually changing and the landscapes of our lives are continually shifting. It follows easily that our Neters are also changing right along with us.

And as we evolve, so do our cards; as our cards evolve, so do our decks.

Character Studies

I think that’s a wonderful summary of what SoulCollage® is: a study of our personal cast of characters. Our Committee cards represent the many characters or facets within us, while the Community suit reflects the others who’ve impacted our lives. Our Companions embrace nature’s characters that are of special importance. Council cards represent aspects of character that are mythic, grand and universal.

Lately, characters of a different sort are guiding me to deeper self-reflection. These are the figures and personas we find in fiction. I meet them in books, films, television series and plays. From the grandest of Broadway musicals to a modest collection of short stories, I am increasingly aware of which fictional characters captivate me, intrigue me, frighten me or simply annoy me. Some observations help me to better understand myself; others shed light on past or current relationships. Of particular meaning are the characters that have helped me meet a new Neter or broadened my relationship with an existing card. Fiction is proving to be a key informant as I and my SoulCollage® deck evolve.

My first example comes from what many regard as the first modern novel: Cervantes’ Don Quixote. While I’ve not yet read it in entirety, I can describe every scene and sing every song from the musical Man of La Mancha! This tale has sporadically touched my life since the 1960s, including studying excerpts in high school and enjoying a 2018 Edinburgh Fringe play that brilliantly interwove the struggles of Cervantes and Don Quixote. I have always intended to honor Quixote somehow in my deck, but it didn’t happen until this year. I was experiencing overwhelming futility blended with some serious determination when I came upon the term “quixotic” in an article. It was clear: I needed a Quixote card and I needed it now! I found two perfect images and made this card. We had quite a conversation and although I’d “wanted” this card to be about me, it spoke as the expert consultant on honorably tilting at windmills. He reminded me: “targets are moving fast in this world – it’s not your skill, it’s the shifting landscape.” This card is in my Community suit.

Nope, we’re not getting through this article without mention of Game of Thrones. Through the books and the years-long television series, the character of Tyrion Lannister has become a soulmate. Additionally, I’m a big fan of the actor who played Tyrion, Peter Dinklage. I have a Community card that honors both the character and the man, and it’s a wonderful reminder that good and powerful things do come in small packages (I am a petite person). That card recently offered me the humorous perspective that there can be utility and importance in cleaning up other people’s messes.

I don’t want to neglect non-human characters, so I’m sharing my rebuilt “Playful Self” card. The original card didn’t feel complete until I found an appropriate image of King Julian from the 2005 film, Madagascar. He is one of my favorite characters of all time. He embodies the unbounded capacity to enjoy making a fool of oneself. I adore him and, in turn, the silly and sometimes foolish parts of me. And, yes, I do “like to move it!”

Lastly, I want to share the ongoing journey I’ve had with self-destructive young women characters. I noticed being particularly bothered by young women doing risky, “stupid” things. This happened with books, films, and television series. I’ve recently prodded myself to watch the new series, Euphoria, which displays such behavior almost unbearably. Well, I’m suddenly feeling much less irritated by such portrayals. Why? I’ve begun making a card for my own “risky teenager” self and it’s quite liberating! I’ve already had several forgiving conversations with her.

I invite you to discover what wisdom your favorite or most despised fictional characters might have to offer on your journey of self-discovery.

Here are some explorations for you to try:

1. Is there a specific fictional medium that you relate to most strongly? For example, are books or films more engrossing for you? Or perhaps you’re more of a generalist and can relate to a compelling character from any medium. Take some time to think about how you are most likely to meet memorable fictional characters. How did you meet them when you were younger?

2. Recall a fictional character that has inspired you recently. Take some time to note what aspects of this person (or animal or fantasy being) appealed to you. Consider how this character is similar to you or how it evokes something you are striving for. Peruse your deck to see whether you have cards of any suit that reflect an aspect(s) of the character. Allow this character to inspire a new card, if that feels right.

3. If you’re up for it, try using character studies to embrace shadow energies. Give some attention to a character that has annoyed or repulsed you. Again, look through your deck. Consider creating a card, if that is helpful to your processing.

4. Can you identify a character “type” that consistently speaks to you? This may be an archetype of known or new meaning to you.

5. Consider re-reading, listening to or viewing the sources of these characters once you have worked with your cards. Ask your card(s) to comment on these original sources that inspired your introspection.
