Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

You're Bigger Than They Are

When my beloved cat Sasha was only a kitten, it was always a struggle to clip her claws. Armed with a pair of nail clippers, I proceeded cautiously, fearful of injuring her. What always ensued was a tussle, a struggle, a veritable melee: me versus the kitten . . . with the kitten emerging as champion. Sasha always managed to squirm away, and her claws thus kept growing longer and sharper. Ouch.

Several months into these failed, fearful attempts at claw-snipping, we went to the vet for Sasha's yearly check-up. Dr. Friedman commented on how long her claws were, so I proceeded to tell him how hard it was to cut them. “She's always squirming around,” I explained. “I'm afraid of hurting her. She just won't sit still, and then she runs away from me.”

Even though this was many years ago, I remember our vet's kind response to this day. He stopped me in midsentence, put his hand up, palm facing me like a stop sign, then said, “I think you're forgetting something. You're bigger than she is.

His words stopped my self-defeating thoughts right in their well-grooved tracks. Could it possibly be that simple? I am bigger than she is. I can hold her still! After that day I was able to do it easily and effortlessly. Claw-trimming time became a time of cuddling, and my Sasha-girl sat still for it every week for the rest of her long, loving life.

As I think about this story now, I see that maybe it can be like this in my inner world as well. Oftentimes, I hear myself whining and complaining that certain inner voices (Queen Puritanica, the Overeaters, Ethel, my Inner Critic . . . etc.) have taken over again. When this happens, I feel helpless and out of control.
But when I think about this now in light of what I learned from our vet, I realize something important. Yes, I am certainly bigger than my little animal friends, but isn't it true that “I” am also bigger than each of my inner parts? Isn't it absolutely true that “I” am the one who is in charge? Me. ME! I am the one who decides what goes on inside of me in the long run, don’t I? So why do I let these shadowed inner voices sometimes get the better of me? Is it fear… or just old patterns running in their familiar grooves?

Maybe it’s simply that I've forgotten a very simple truth: I am bigger than they are.

If “I” am not strong enough yet to talk back to these parts of myself, then maybe I can ask a different, brighter, stronger part of myself to converse with them instead. There are many wise, clear parts of my inner world who can do this: Wise One, Smart One, Good Mother, and the Priestess, to name a few.

Try it yourself and see.

Guest Columnist: Cat Caracelo

I am Cat Caracelo, M.A., a SoulCollage® facilitator, depth coach, guidess and artist from Petaluma, California, offering my work individually and in global teaching forums. This column is for all of you who are exploring your creativity and are ready to discover more depth in your SoulCollage® journey.

Committee Suit as Spectrum of Self

The SoulCollage® Committee suit is what I also refer to as the spectrum of self. This is the full (rainbow) reflection of the many aspects of feeling, expression, and mood that I experience internally and externally as a human. The miraculous, the mischievous, the funky, the amazing, the funny, the painful, playful and edgy parts of ME are able to be discovered, allowed and expressed in art process.

Entering into relationship with my inner parts, those that are expressed and those that are hidden, is courageous and creative work. Exploring their stories and perspectives offers me profound access to unrecognized wisdom.

Through every life experience, starting from early on, we all accumulate and acquire distinct parts of self. The development of my understanding of Spectrum of Self and Spectrum of Experience came mainly from a creative approach, using imagery and simple writing prompts allowing me to engage more lightly, and ironically, more deeply with my own self.

As I searched for all of the Light, as well as all of the shades of shadow and darkness, I was seeking a way in, a gentle entering place to ease the complexity of connecting. A path such as this often leads to deeper work, linking personal myth, lived stories, and perspectives in more complex and multi-directional ways.

Years ago, within a guided imagery experience I was surprised to find a dirty, emaciated vampire child that I had not known was held within my psyche. She was barely visible and well-camouflaged, dwelling deep in an underground grotto. I could see that she was sad and fearful, emitting energetic waves of deep mistrust.

She was not frightening or pathetic, although I was aware that others might have seen that in her; rather, I felt in my own body her sense of profound overwhelm. It was a distinctive kind of flooding horror that she was experiencing.

Through this part of myself that I had no conscious knowledge of previously, I began to deepen my relationship with the power of seeking shadow. Slowly listening and moving closer over time, I began to offer my inner vampire child some warmth and sustenance. I learned to understand the language of my own darkness as I listened to her stories. This journey led me to unravel and understand my own life’s experiences. My inability to be connected to my emotions became illuminated through her. I, too, was empathic and overwhelmed by the emotional pain of others. I saw where I was unconsciously operating as the wounded child- hidden, a victim, and sometimes feeding myself on the energy of others.

Over the years she has grown and changed. Fast forward 15 years…

It was just an ordinary day when the email came. A reply from a message I had sent over a week ago to someone I’d found on an ancestry site as I was seeking to discover my biological mother. Having been adopted in 1962, I was on a quest. Opening the email, I felt the earth shake beneath the surface of my life as I realized I was making contact with my biological mother’s cousin.

Once lost and now found, I felt the seismic crack that opened the shell of me, and I watched as I emerged, newborn again at 56, blinking in the bright light of reveling in having this mother back in my life, hearing her voice, and finally meeting her.

All of my core stories are still shifting as I write this.

A powerful example of the range between lost and found, the vampire child and the newborn woman…all of the parts that have been held, active, alive between these two expressions. The many shades in the rainbow of my life have been altered by new experience.

This safe and reflective process of art, spectrum and exploring “the committee” inspires curiosity and willingness. It takes courage to explore in this way.

The Committee holds both challengers and allies, just as I have shared in my story. They are expressed in a myriad of hues; each serves the whole and holds a powerful purpose. They are the many colors of the spectrum of light. In order to see the colors of a rainbow we must be and see at 42 degrees. Every one of us who sees a rainbow is seeing the light at exactly 42 degrees from the sun. That is THE angle and aperture for seeing what colors and shades are present in a spectrum of light.

What are your shades and hues?

When we can find a way to see all of the expressions that contribute to the tapestry or spectrum of parts – we have greater access to ourselves. This is truly powerful work!

A new global eCourse Wild Essence begins on July 2nd – join the journey and work with your parts, archetypes and stories in art and process!

I am the one who bends over backwards to make everyone else happy. I am the one who is only happy when everyone else is happy. Sometimes I am helpful because it’s a good thing to please others. Online 4-Hour SoulCollage® Video Retreat

Saturday, July 28, 2018
12 noon - 4 pm Eastern

If you can’t attend in person, we’ll send you the video recording along with all handouts.

Anne Marie will lead the first 90 minutes of our time together with an Opening Circle to gather us into "retreat mode." During this time there will also be teaching and sharing on the concept of forgiveness and how we can begin to activate forgiveness in our own lives through the process of SoulCollage®. This session will include teaching, optional group discussion, visual examples, guided imagery, and journaling.

Then we’ll break so everyone can be on their own for one hour to make cards (and believe me, by then you'll be really inspired to make some cards!). We’ll turn the recording off but we will all remain on the video link as much as possible, so that we can all stay connected.

We’ll gather together again for the last 90 minutes for some more insight-full journaling, lots of sharing of our cards, and a closing circle to send us back out of the retreat and into our lives, having moved just a little bit closer to forgiveness, or an understanding of forgiveness.

Because we'll be connected by video, you can hold a new (or old!) card up to the camera and everyone will be able to see it as you talk about it! As always, sharing is optional.

It’s going to be AWESOME!
