Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

I can't really explain it,
I haven't got the words.
It's a feeling that you can't control.
I suppose it's like forgetting, losing who you are,
and at the same time something makes you whole.

--- Lyrics from song Electricity
Broadway Musical Billy Elliot,
by Elton John & Lee Hall

We live near some really good regional theatres and I've been fortunate to see the Tony award-winning Billy Elliot several times locally (as well as once in Florida!). The plot revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes once he realizes how much he loves to dance.

After much hard work and some emotionally devastating scenes where he and his ballet teacher clash with his bewildered father, Billy attends an audition at the Royal Ballet School in London. At one point during the audition, a panel member asks him, "What does it feel like when you are dancing?"

At first, Billy is baffled, but then he is moved to sing (and dance) his response to a powerful song called Electricity. I've printed some of the lyrics above, in the Quote section. You can also see a beautiful rendition of it on video here.

I have seen the musical live several times as well as once on PBS television and I admit that I have watched the above video numerous times (but I'm not counting!). Each time I hear this song, electricity sparks inside of me! I love this particular part of the show because it reminds me about how I feel inside, not when I'm dancing, but when I'm writing, when I'm making art, when I'm making a new SoulCollage® card.

Here are some other lines from this song that really speak to me about the creative process:

I suppose it's like forgetting, losing who you are
and at the same time something makes you whole...

In the midst of a creative project I often experience this seemingly contradictory sense of losing myself in the process yet at the same time feeling absolutely whole, balanced, centered. For me, this is one of the most beautiful gifts that creativity brings.

It's like when you've been crying
and you're empty and you're full...

Do you know that feeling? That pleasurable release/relief that comes when you've had a good cry? It is indeed an empty yet full feeling. It's also an accurate description of how I feel after being so absorbed in a creative project and I'm looking at the finished project.

But then I feel it move me
Like a burning deep inside
Something bursting me wide open, impossible to hide
And suddenly I'm flying, flying like a bird
Like electricity, electricity
Sparks inside of me
And I'm free I'm free...

This card from my deck honors my inner Creative Child. Since I was very young, I have often felt creativity moving inside of me and sometimes it is like a burning, like electricity- sometimes it is bright and sparking; sometimes it is more subtle. If I give it permission to be what it is, then I am giving it freedom... I am giving myself freedom. It's an amazing feeling, one that both feeds and sustains me.

Putting It Into Practice

How do you feel when you're creating something? Do any of the above words resonate with you?

Make a SoulCollage® card that expresses what happens inside of you when the "electricity" of creativity takes over.

Guest Columnist: Cat Caracelo

I am Cat Caracelo, M.A., a SoulCollage® facilitator, depth coach, teacher and artist from Petaluma, California, offering my work individually and in global teaching forums. This column is for all of you who are exploring your creative and are ready to discover more depth in your SoulCollage® journey.

The Creatrix and the Creative Life

Living creatively is a dynamic act.

Creative living is sensual and sensory; it introduces us to our true selves, the aspects we know as well as those we have hidden behind or are not yet known. Creativity is personal and yet it is not isolated to individual process. Through art as process, and SoulCollage®, we come to see how we are actively changing. We experience ourselves through symbol, image, texture, color, story and dreams. We rise inside as we explore, express and come to embody the artist within, yet it is the emerging energy of creative fire, the Creatrix herself, that can bring new energy to our creative practice.

Creativity has been defined and described through many lenses throughout time. In my youth I learned that the word artist was reserved for fine artists, but as I grew into my teens I was being influenced by self-expression in ways that couldn’t be denied. From subtle and philosophical to wild and raunchy, I was exposed to the Creatrix long before I knew her personally.

As an art school dropout, I disowned my artist, my fiery creative one. The parts of me that yearned to express themselves in nonlinear ways were subdued and redirected. It wasn't until I returned to meet these disowned parts over 20 years later that I could redefine what creativity meant to me.

I found my way back to discovering art as process while doing shadow work, parts work and ancestral shamanism, finding that which had been disowned and lost through time and perspective. SoulCollage® was one of the potent creative ways that informed me in those earliest days, and there were other strong connections and teachers influencing my process and growing awareness at this same time.

Finding creativity within yourself is an act of art-making and life-making. Identifying the artist within and discovering what is true for you will bring you into relationship with your archetypal Creatrix. Each time you recognize that you are in a creative act (no matter what form it takes), ask her to guide you. Through her rising wisdom, you will often discover aspects of your brilliance and feel the heat of the creative fire.

You may also find yourself led to parts of self who have been diminished or disowned. This is because the Creatrix wants you to understand where creativity might be blocked. Many times these parts of self will come through with a story, a challenge, or critical voices. They may throw tantrums, question, or discount your efforts. When critic energy comes, be very conscious of where those parts hold self-worth, fear of failure, and other shadow stories. Often this energy is the residue of the past- other people’s shame that has been “swallowed” inadvertently, by you. But when creative fire is rising it can frighten the young ones inside, so parts of self that are hyper-protective will struggle.

This is where SoulCollage® holds profound possibility. In utilizing this method of creating, the process of expression can reveal what is true and reconnect us with what we need to know. The relationship with the creative act will expose whatever is needed, not only in the layering of images that are compelling, but discovering new layers of knowing through the interpretive readings and speaking from the cards themselves.

This saved me. Art as process, what might be called expressive or transformative art, became my new model of being an artist: living life through the lens of art, feeling my hands connecting to material, and remembering deep roots back in time. Over time I was able to foster a deep and dynamic relationship with all of my inner (and outer) artists, some were quiet and contemplative while others were determined and non-linear, young and old alike. Some shapeshifted and invited me to become other than human. These parts of self all expressed unique needs, perspectives and qualities. All of this wisdom became my self-knowledge that circled the guidance of the Creatrix, who often came (and comes) in the form of Fire Dancer to beat the drum, light the flame…

Artist, dancer, warrior, visionary. She rises inside.

Invite the Creatrix to guide your life.

Questions to Dive Into:
  1. When it comes to creativity, is there something you yearn to refine or redefine?
  2. How are your inner artists speaking to you or through you?
  3. Who asking to be noticed, allowed and accepted?
  4. What new knowledge will Creatrix bring to you when she is offered space, image and voice?
