Soul Singing with Anne Marie

Facing Our Wounds

By probing our own tragic dimensions for its deeper story, and by raising it to a mythic level, our wounding can become an opening through which grace can pour its healing balm. We become spiritually charged and awakened to a larger, nobler life. ~ Jean Houston

My first introduction to the concept of “wounded healer” was in the 1980’s at an Episcopal Church. Our rector, Randy, often spoke of Jesus as a Wounded Healer, and he also referred to himself and all of us as wounded healers in a broken world. I was in my 30’s then, and frankly, I couldn’t quite grasp what he was saying. I understood the bit about Jesus, but not about the rest of us, and certainly not me.

I’ve never considered myself a “healer,” but lately, in doing research for this column, and in seeing all of the readers’ cards for this issue, I’ve been feeling led to broaden my definition of what a healer really is. In my mind, a healer was always someone who touched people in some way and made them well. Randy was a healer. My mother’s best friend Hazel was a healer. Their lives were centered in faith and prayer, and when they touched people, all kinds of healing, both inner and outer, happened.

Now, however, I can see that healing is about so much more than that. Both Randy and Hazel were letting a power greater than themselves flow through them to create a healing in someone else. Another thing Randy and Hazel had in common was their ability to face their own woundedness. Each of them had sorrows and “cracks in their armor” from their past and they were not afraid to face them and talk about them openly with the people that they ministered to.

That, for me, is the biggest quality of wounded healers- they have faced their wounds, whatever they are, no matter how deep, and allowed them to become, as Jean Houston so wisely says in the above quote, “an opening through which grace can pour its healing balm.”

After realizing this, I see that my life has been continually interspersed with many such wounded healers. The halls of the 12 Step Meetings I attended in my 30’s were packed with wounded healers. All of the teachers and leaders that I am drawn to have significant wounding in their past that they willingly share with us: Thich Nhat Hanh. Mark Nepo. Seena Frost. Tara Brach. Marion Woodman. Wayne Dyer. And so many more. Take a look at the teachers, authors, and leaders that you are drawn to and I think you will see a similar pattern emerging.

So I have revised my definition of “wounded healer” to include myself. There are a few particular wounds that have profoundly changed me, and one of them is the essence of my two journeys with cancer. I made the SoulCollage® card above several months after my second journey ended in 2012 and although I have worked with this Neter before, it was never clear to me who she really was. Here and now, I name her Wounded Healer. She says, I am the one who has lost a breast, whose body bears the scars from two cancer surgeries. I am the one who stands strong and tall and full of light in spite of, and maybe because of, these scars. I am the one who bears the message to the world that cancer comes bearing many gifts and that thriving after such a journey is possible.

When I first got each of those cancer diagnoses, I certainly was not happy about any of it. But I did my best to face the wounding (both physical and emotional) that occurred each time, and I also did my best to allow the light of some greater Presence to flow through me so that my own healing could progress, and also so that I could share that healing with others. I cannot lay my hands on you and heal you of your cancer, but I can (and do) share my story with others, and as my wounds touch others, many kinds of healing do occur.

I encourage you to take a moment today to look back on your own life. What kinds of wounds do you bear? These might not necessarily be physical wounds. Other life events and experiences leave us wounded and sometimes broken. Divorce. Childhood abuse. Job loss. Separation. Mental distress. Loss of home. Loss of a loved one. Choose just one and spend some time facing it this week. Owning it. Then, if you are ready, probe this wound for its “deeper story,” and find a way to share that story with others who might be going through the same thing.

Also, here is an excellent article on the Wounded Healer that I highly recommend.

Celebrating Our Sexuality with SoulCollage®
60 minute SoulCollage® tele-class
with SoulCollage® Facilitators
Dot Everhart and Anne Marie Bennett

What cards do you have in your deck that celebrate sexuality? Is sexuality something you "celebrate" or was it more of a taboo subject in your family?

During this tele-class, we'll explore how our SoulCollage® cards can help us to celebrate our individual expressions of sexuality.

Bring a journal and any cards you have made that reflect sexuality in your life-- even if they are shadow cards or cards you don't typically show to anyone else. If you haven't made any such cards, be on the lookout for images that evoke a sense of sexuality for you.

Finding the Blessing

There is an African proverb that says: “The blessing lies next to the wound.” I believe this saying underlies the nature of the archetype of the Wounded Healer. It is a saying that I repeat to myself often, having come to know that a blessing sometimes takes many years to become visible to me. It has taken more than thirty years for me to see the blessing in one of my early wounds. I had to grow to a certain point in my life before the blessing could be made known. I have also discovered that a wound has often turned out to be an entry into a phase of expansive soul growth for me, and when I look back I am grateful for the turn of events. These experiences have helped me become more flexible in my outlook and more trusting in the journey I am on.

I’ve also discovered through my own life experience that how I interpret my wound determines whether it hurts for a long time or whether it heals quickly. And so I choose to look at how I can help heal my wounds rather than keep them raw and vulnerable. I try to remember that, as writer Ernest Hemingway said, “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” So I try as best I can, to cultivate strength in the hurt places, and to believe that the process of healing will teach me more about myself and take me to a deeper understanding of my purpose in the world.

And of course, having a couple of Neters in my SoulCollage® deck to support and encourage me not to fall into Victim mode, is a great help. Two of these Neters I call “Entwined” and “Freedom Wings”. They are members of my committee suit and remind me of what my soul knows to be true.

My card “Entwined” reminds me that I Am One Who knows that everything is connected, that beginnings are endings, that endings are beginnings, and that the journey brings us back to the starting place where we can know ourselves more deeply. I Am One Who chooses the circular path of understanding, who sees the benefit of the contrast without which there is no path or design and who knows we are all part of an entwined web.

My card “Freedom Wings” tells me I Am One Who chooses to wear wings, who chooses to see myself as free even when I feel trapped. I Am One Who knows that the sweetness is always available if I push against discomfort and confinement. I Am One Who knows my wings can take me where I want to go.

Knowing that these Neters are parts of me gives me the strength to remember that I am free to choose my response to a wound, and that sometimes a wound deserves my gratitude as it is there to show me the path to grow more fully into who I came here to be.

Wounded Healer
Committee Suit

I am the one who is unheard and whose needs are unmet. I cry out, but no one listens. When I am finally heard I am punished for interrupting, for being a nuisance. I am slapped and my play glasses break, mirroring my broken heart. I am the one with an inner angel, wounded with an inner emptiness, soothing my loneliness and tears. I am the one whose inner angel channels my pain into listening intently and helping others heal. My sadness and hurt ignite my caring and empathy for others who are hurting, who are seeking their own inner voices, and the strength to make their voices heard and at home in the world.

Survivor/Wounded Healer
Suit Unknown

I am the one who is transformed when I recognize that my wound is completely personal and uniquely my own, while simultaneously, a universal process in which anyone may one day be 'participating' in, if not right now. I am the one who recognizes and sees the truth that wounding is a shared 'felt sense' that deeply connects us with each other, if we so choose. Within our challenges comes our risings.

Wounded Healer
Committee Suit

I am one who holds the hands of others even when I am in need of Healing Touch. I am one who sometimes can't tell whose hand is bandaged and whose hand is whole. I am one who often wished other people could see my need for help as well as I see theirs.

Soul Soother
Community Suit
North Carolina

I am one who knows that wounds are fertile. They must open and empty into the wounded spirit to be reclaimed. Healers seek solace in the power to heal, to love without regret, turning to the Vast Power of Being to release the hurt and pain; to live with grace and dignity for holding the suffering and soothing the fears. We reach deep inside for the wholeness of the Mystery of reweaving and returning to our true selves, The Healers the wound remembered.

Childhood Scars
Committee Suit

I am one who digs deeply to transform childhood wounds into beautiful new ways of understanding.

Healed and Healing
Committee Suit

I am the one who healed with the power of love, medicine and creativity. As I held on tightly to my will to live, letting go of what weighted me down was healing. When my body was weak, shifting from neediness to gratitude for help from others was healing. Although my life fell apart as I never imagined, creating beauty with the broken pieces was healing. Creativity became a source of healing energy and expression for myself and to share with others. I am the one who has healed, continues to heal and wishes to inspire the healing of others.

Suit Unknown

Darkness from the past caresses me, nurtures me, grows me into being able to be an angel of light in the dark.

For four hours we'll gather together via an easy-to-click-and-access Zoom video conference link where we can actually see each other. (You can also call in via phone).

We’ll begin with an Opening Circle to gather us into "retreat mode," plus teaching and guided meditation on getting in touch with our playful, happy inner selves which will lead us into talking about the healing power of humor, and how we can represent humor and playfulness more fully within our SoulCollage® Decks.

Then we'll break so everyone can be on their own an hour to make cards. We'll turn the recording off but Anne Marie will stay on the video link (as she makes her own cards) in case you have a question or want to share something.

After that we'll gather together for the last 90 minutes for some play-full as well as insight-full journaling, lots of sharing of our cards, and a closing circle to send us back out of the retreat and into our lives.

It's going to be AWESOME!

If you can't attend in person, we'll send you the recording of the first and last 90 minutes of teaching and examples, along with all handouts.
NEW! Online Workshop

Working with Your Inner Writer with SoulCollage® Facilitator Nancy Norbeck

June 4-25, 2017

Face to Face is an exploration of what writing is, what it means to write, and how we can use our SoulCollage® decks to tap into stories and ideas that we might not ordinarily find - in our decks, or in our own imaginations. Perfect for the beginning writer or for a seasoned writer looking for a new approach, Face to Face will give you the chance to get writing (or get writing again!) in a friendly, supportive group environment.

This course is designed to give new and seasoned fiction writers new ways to engage with their writing, using SoulCollage® to tap into intuition for background material, writing experiments, and more formal writing projects. Character development, plot, setting, and other story elements will be enhanced using SoulCollage® and other images. And we'll be writing live on the call!

Bonus: Be one of the first TEN to register, and you'll receive a FREE coaching session with Nancy via telephone or Skype. This 30-40 minute session can be used for help with your writing or another creative block.

Led by Nancy Norbeck, Master Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach, SoulCollage® Facilitator, and author of The Silver Child, this online series will meet in a spirit of creativity and collaborative friendship as we all find moments of awe and laughter. We'll see how even our "worst" efforts have value, and how they can lead us into unexpected discovery and inspiration. You may end up with a poem, a short story, the seed of a novel, maybe even a play or a memoir - or more than one.
