Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Permission to Rest

I made this card for my deck a little bit intuitively and a little bit intentionally. I had set out to honor the part of me who sometimes is lazy, and trust me, I wasn't thinking of this Neter in a particularly positive way. It was 2006, the very beginning of my SoulCollage® journey, and having read about honoring our shadowed parts with cards, I thought this would be a good place to start.
Imagine my surprise when, after I started journaling with this Neter, it told me: I Am the One Who gives you permission to rest. Of course, it said a whole lot of other things first, about lying around doing nothing, and not wanting to be productive for a while. As usually happens with this unique journaling process, sometimes after a lot of negative whining, a solid gold gift will pop right out! And there it was: I give you permission to rest.

Suddenly I was looking at this card very differently! I saw firsthand what Seena meant when she said that every Neter has a positive intent and a negative potential.

For me, this particular Neter's negative potential was the only thing that I had seen previously: the tendency to be lazy, to lie around doing nothing, all productivity stalled.

But oh . . . the positive intent: permission to rest. I could see the bright side of this Neter completely now. I could see its gift to me clearly.

I now call this card Permission to Rest instead of Laziness. I am amazed by how, when I was making it, I chose restful shades of gray instead of bright colors like most of my other cards. Somehow, I intuitively knew to do that.

Whenever I draw this card in a reading, it speaks to me about taking time away from the do-ing and spending more time with my be-ing. This is something I need to be reminded of on a regular basis, and I'm grateful for this restful reminder who lives in my deck.

Time for Reflection
When was the last time you stopped do-ing and just let yourself just be? Are you able to give yourself permission to rest even for just a few minutes today? Your body, mind and spirit will thank you.

Try making your own “Permission to Rest” card and keep it in your deck as a reminder to give yourself a break from do-ing so you can enjoy simply be-ing. Remember that your card might look very different from mine!

OUR NEXT TELE-CLASS

60 minute SoulCollage®
tele-class with SoulCollage® Facilitator
Joan Stockbridge in California.

Thursday June 23, 2016
7 pm Eastern

Mystics, saints, and sages of all traditions have many names for the Divine, including God, Yahweh, Source, Mystery, and Brahma. There are also many names for the part of us that is intimately connected to the Divine, such as True Self, Higher Self, soul, spirit, atman, inner guru, and essence. These words nobly attempt to name the Unnamable so that we can evolve our relationship to the Ultimate. However, language has its limits, especially regarding the Transcendent. As a long-term spiritual seeker, Joan Stockbridge has found that image-based SoulCollage® is a profound way to explore the sacred dimension. It also bridges religious belief and spiritual experience.

In this short tele-class, Joan will share how SoulCollage® expands and deepens her spiritual and religious journeys, including how she uses it as a prayer practice and to work with her dreams. She’ll lead us in an exercise intended to help us access our sacred depths as an opening to the Divine. There will be time for questions and sharing as well.

Portals of Self-Care

How often do you make time for yourself? So often we find our own self-care relegated to the end of our to-do lists, something to do when everything else has been attended to. As a result we seldom give ourselves the care we give to others.

I remember the day when I realized I had no idea what self-care in my life even looked like. But my moment of clarity came when my daughter said to me “Mum, self-care is not optional.” I realized that I had to create a self-care regime for myself and move my own self-care at the top of my to-do list. It was time to acknowledge that taking care of myself was not selfish, it was a necessity.

SoulCollage® is one of my self-care practices (along with swinging on the swing in the back yard, painting and pasting in my art journal and walking my labyrinth). When I’m anxious or agitated I sit and make cards. The process calms me and helps me let go of thoughts that threaten to overwhelm me. Creating cards brings me into the present moment and relaxes my stressed body. The images engage my attention and keep me absorbed in what is happening right now, right in front of me.

Unlike meditation where I am constantly distracted by thoughts, I find that my thoughts do not bother me when I am absorbed in card making. Using my imagination for creativity is so much more helpful than using it to worry about things that may not happen. Giving my mind a rest opens me up to listen to that part of me that sees the bigger picture. Making cards gives me a breathing space and lets me return to my day feeling as if a sense of spaciousness has opened up inside me.

I consider those times that I allow my creative spirit to play as portals of self-care, which expand the way I see the world and allow me time to rejuvenate my spirit. SoulCollage® is a particularly restful way to create as it gives me a way to express how I am feeling without using words. It is a kind of visual journal of my thoughts without the effort of having to engage my left brain with language and words.

I believe we have to consciously make time for ourselves in this fast paced world, and for me, I find it necessary for my survival. By giving myself this time I am able to access insights that rushing does not allow. I make better decisions and am intuitively guided on how to move forward in directions that are life-affirming. We know that we need to feed and exercise our bodies for them to function, and I’ve discovered that I also need to feed and tend my soul to function in a whole-hearted and balanced way.

I made this SoulCollage® card to represent my Inner Care-Giver. The Buddha figure is so joyful and reminds me to live with a lightness of being.

Do you have an inner care-giver card in your deck? If not, I highly recommend that you create one which will remind you why self-care should be a priority in your life. Consider asking this card what you need more of in your life and what you need less of in your life to find those places where you are out of balance. The answers from your card will show where you can be kinder to yourself.

SoulCollage® can become a lifelong creative self-care practice, one that will enable you to truly change your world into a far more nourishing and joyful place.

I am one who needs to post this card on my fridge where it could remind me to me mindful when I eat.
