Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Unexpected Journeys

I like to think of life as a journey. It's a good metaphor, right? You're traveling a path; sometimes there's nice scenery, sometimes not. Sometimes there's good weather, sometimes there are storms to hike through. Rainbows, sleet, sunshine. Mild or harsh weather. Sometimes you walk alone, and other times we have companions. It's all a journey, right?

But then there are Unexpected Journeys. You're walking along on your own path, minding your own business, walking to the best of your ability. You're really sure about the direction you're heading in... it all seems clear and simple and you're actually pretty happy and everything is like it's always been. And then WHAM, suddenly and without warning, there's a huge POTHOLE in front of you and you fall in. Or suddenly there's a craggy mountain looming right smack in front of your face and there's no way around it; you have to CLIMB it. Or a tornado picks you up and whirls you around 'til you're on a different road altogether (remember Dorothy?). Thus begins a new and unexpected, unwanted, uncalled for, unwelcome, uninvited, decidedly DIFFERENT journey.

The worst thing, for me anyway, about these unexpected journeys isn't that they're awful or really difficult (although they usually are). It's that they are unexpected. We didn't see it coming. We were planning on walking a different path! And now, all of a sudden, it's not going to happen the way we thought it would. That, for me, was pretty much the hardest part of my own two journeys with cancer. I didn't see it coming. I was not prepared. Maybe you can relate!

There is powerful archetypal Fool energy afoot whenever we are spun onto an unexpected journey.

Now, there are unexpected journeys that can be seen as thrilling and adventurous and good. For example, in 1991 I was rethinking certain career choices and planning to go back to teaching. Then I met my husband Jeff and suddenly I'm on an unexpected whirlwind journey of love, marriage, stepfamily. In 2005 I created a website that focuses on SoulCollage® for my own workshop participants here in Massachusetts and suddenly I'm connected to SoulCollagers around the world and before I can say Seena Frost, I'm on an unexpected journey of building a business, a journey of deep connection, new friends, creative possibilities.

If you stop and look back over your life, you will probably see many unexpected journeys, or at least a few. Some of them were welcomed and rejoiced over... and some were not. I invite you to choose an unexpected journey from your own life story, either past or present, and use SoulCollage® to give image to your journey in some way. This will help to soften the impact of this life interruption, as well as cause it to wreak less havoc on your life.

On this page are some examples of the SoulCollage® cards I made in 2011-12 to give image to my own interrupted journey with cancer. As you think about your own interrupted journeys, notice that lots of my cards are about feelings. There is great power in giving image and honoring the emotional toll that unexpected journeys take on us. I made a lot of these cards intuitively, and some with great intention. Allow the same to be true for you.

I close with a quote from Mark Nepo. May it remind you that transformation is to be found and claimed, even in those unexpected journeys that take us off of our original path.

To journey without changing is to be a nomad.
To change without journeying is to be a chameleon.
But to journey and be transformed by the journey,
that is to be a Pilgrim.
--- Mark Nepo

OUR NEXT TELE-CLASS

60 minute SoulCollage® tele-class
with SoulCollage® Facilitator
Chantel Zimmerman in California

Thursday June 12, 2014
7 pm Eastern

Labyrinths offer an opportunity for meditation and contemplation. Their ability to help us go inward greatly enhances the SoulCollage® process by revealing, illuminating, and uncovering unexpected insights. The rhythmic experience of a walked labyrinth involves the body, thus deepening the SoulCollage® experience, taking it to a new level.

During this 60 minute tele-class, we will learn the history, uses, and elements of the labyrinth, and explore its connection to SoulCollage®. We will "walk" a finger labyrinth, and let the walk inspire a card reading. After a brief time for discussion, we will end the call with ideas and suggestions for merging the labyrinth with SoulCollage® for personal (and group) use.

Sacred Journey to my Soul

I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within. --- Lillian Smith

So far this year, I've made a number of journeys - to South Africa, to California, to Pennsylvania - and soon I will leave on another overseas trip, this time to France to lead a photography retreat. These outward journeys are always exciting. They open my eyes to new ways of seeing and being, and I love the explorations and new discoveries. These journeys remind me of images of pathways leading off into the distance. I've always loved their sense of mystery and adventure, and that is what my travels abroad feel like.

But after a lot of traveling I often find it hard to settle back into the rhythm and routine of everyday life back home. I feel disoriented and not quite sure what direction to move in. I've discovered that the best thing to do when I feel like this is to walk my labyrinth. I'm fortunate to have an eleven circuit medieval design labyrinth in my back yard right outside my studio, and I always turn to my labyrinth when I'm stuck creatively, or feeling anxious or directionless. Because the labyrinth is so close to my studio, it also means that it is still always in sight which allows the pattern to imprint on my body.

Walking in circles does something to my body. It almost feels like an unwinding or unraveling, but in a good way, as if I were a ball of wool that has become tangled and needs to be unwound before being refashioned into a smooth ball again. Walking the labyrinth calms and clears both my body and my mind. It seems to lead me back home again towards myself.

What I love most about my journey to the center of the labyrinth is that I can unwind mentally and physically, knowing that as long as I just follow the path, I will find my way to the center. The labyrinth has a single path into and out of the center. There are no decisions to be made about which fork in the road to take, or whether to take the scenic route. Sometimes it is a relief to do something that requires nothing of you other than being in the present moment. So different from journeys outward to new places, where there are hundreds of small decisions to be made.

The labyrinth takes me on a journey inward without my having to work at getting there, and so the walking helps me find myself again. The sense of just going where the path leads, knowing that it will give me what I need in the moment, feels like a sacred journey to my soul.

Returning from my travels this year, I also became obsessed with cutting spirals. It was as if the archetype of the spiral was calling to me to circle back to find myself. And of course these spirals found their way into my art, including my SoulCollage® cards. This obsession doesn't seem so strange when I see the labyrinth as a form of spiral which holds both the journey inward and the journey outward, a reminder to me that my life is lived on both on a physical and spiritual level.

In addition to cutting spirals, I've been collaging on my round labyrinth cards, and finding the shape creates a perfect container for exploring where I am right now. Even though I'd like to understand what my fascination with spirals and circles is all about, I'm content to let these shapes journey with and through me, knowing that I will understand when the time is right. It is enough to see my life as a spiral journey, each season repeating itself on the journey, but in a different way because I am different and there is another layer of life lived since my last experience in that season.

I know that my SoulCollage® cards are asking for more circles and spirals. Perhaps they are affirming the words of John O'Donohue: The imagination in its loyalty to possibility often takes the curved path rather than the linear way.
