Soul Singing with Anne
Marie |

Hi! I'm Anne Marie,
the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage® facilitator
in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®,
this column is especially for you.
The Secret of Life
I am writing this on a beautiful spring day, a "golden day" as I like to call these perfect-temperature-clear-sky-light-breeze days that grace us in New England every now and then. My stepdaughter is cooking dinner in the kitchen, her son is fast asleep on the loveseat next to me, my husband and our other grands are out in the backyard happily playing with the dog. Their laughter touches my heart and makes me smile.
All is well, if not perfect, in our household today. Give me a day like this and I want to hold onto it for dear life. Do you know what I mean- when everything is going well: the sun is shining and the kids are happy and the air smells like lilacs? I just want days like this to go on and on and on. Of course, they
don't go on and on. Merri and the kids will leave, night will fall, my husband will argue about taking more cough medicine, the weather will change, and who even knows what tomorrow will bring? No, we can't hang on to days like this... but the good news is that "bad days" don't last forever either!
Many years ago I was attending a large meditation retreat at Kripalu, a Yoga and Retreat Center in western Massachusetts. On the last day, the leader gathered all 50 of us in a large circle with our arms around each others' shoulders. And he very seriously said with great mystery seeping into his voice, "Now it's time. I'm going to share with you the secret to a happy life." Wow, we were all pretty impressed. Then he turned on the CD player and the next thing we heard was James Taylor singing these words:
The secret to life is enjoying the passage of time.
One thing I've discovered on my own life's journey in the years since this "secret" was passed on to me, is that while there's no way to keep "a day like this" forever, there IS a way to make the time pass much more slowly, and that is to pay attention, to stay awake, to notice every moment as it goes by. This way, time doesn't "fly" so much as meander. This way, we have a better chance of enjoying each moment, each day of our lives.
I made the SoulCollage® card here several years ago and I call it "Time in a Bottle." The main figure on this card says
"I am the one who doesn't have enough time. I am the one who is trying to save up all the good times and never let them go. I am the one who wants to control time. I am the one who is afraid I'm running out of time." This card has a very sorrowful, frantic feel to it and I do admit that sometimes I still feel this way about time.
However, last year I was on the Artella website and one of the teachers there suggested we create a piece of art to represent our own personal Time Muse and I jumped to that challenge (see my card at bottom of column to the right). I believe that Time is a great teacher, and if we can stay awake to each moment, we can stop trying to control Time and instead embrace the gifts that Time brings to us.

Time
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time for every purpose, under heaven.
A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones,
a time to gather stones together.
--- Words adapted from the bible, book of Ecclesiastes
--- Music by Pete Seeger
I love the subject of time. And I also really, really dislike it. It's something that is always on our minds, and probably always has been. When I was younger, time moved so slowly it was painful. I remember school finishing in June, and the thought of having to wait until September to see my friends and find out who was in my new class was almost too much to bear.
We spend a lot of time wasting time, and yet we know how precious this commodity is. I am often amazed at some people who seem to get about a week's work done in a day, are able to work full time, raise a family, enjoy hobbies, as well as get to the gym...etc. "Superhuman" maybe, but many many folks aspire to this.
Time fascinates me. Time travel is one topic I never get tired of, and movies with this element keep my attention over and over. I like the idea of getting a "do-over", such as in the movie
Sliding Doors, or Run Lola Run, The Lake House, or the eerie
Donnie Darko. And then there are songs about time. Some of my favorites are
Time is on My Side (Stones), Time in a Bottle (Jim Croce),
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is (Chicago),
Time Passages (Rod Stewart), The Times They Are A Changin' (Bob Dylan) and
Time of the Season (Zombies). Evidently lots of other folks out there are also mesmerized by the subject of time!
So, you might ask, how does this relate to SoulCollage®? One of my earliest cards that had to be made was all about "My Overscheduled Self."
I Am One Who is climbing the corporate ladder, and needs to keep going. I have many different hats, and none of them look very good on me when I'm rushing all the time. I Am One Who believes I can do it all!
Well, that's what I used to tell myself, when I was a new mom, living in England, working for the family business, and trying to be Super Woman. It didn't work very well but I didn't want to acknowledge the signs that things were not in balance. Time has a way of letting you know that you're not really in charge.
Then another card sort of "made itself" on the subject of time. It shows an exploded view of a time piece, and a woman not looking very happy. And an Archetype card of mine, which is the Prostitute, shows a woman in a business suit, in a beautiful house, trying to tie her child's shoe while on an important business call. She has sold out, and isn't doing any of it very well.
Finally, to bring some balance into my life regarding the subject of time, I made a card showing two young girls reading side by side. My friend Linda and I used to do this all the time, just hanging out together, each one absorbed in our own book. We didn't need to talk or "do" anything. We enjoyed being together, enjoyed whatever time we had for our mutual love of reading, and never felt like we were "wasting time."
How do you deal with time? Do you set your clock three minutes ahead? Are you compulsive about getting somewhere on time, only to arrive too early (whatever became of "fashionably late")? Are you chronically running late? I would love to hear from you and see your cards about "TIME"! Thank you!

I am the one who seeks more time,
keeping a watchful eye on making
moments count. Always reaching
for one more way to fill a day,
one more thing to do, create,
think about, try, explore, and dream.
The gift I have for you is to know
there is no turning back the hands
of time, no moment to waste, no
day to be left unexplored. What I
want you to know is timelessness
exists for you also, in the presence
of each moment. Presence lifts
