Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Befriending Our Inner Shadowed Parts

In order to get to the gift or the “positive intent” that one of our inner shadowed parts offers, we need to spend some actual time with it. We're not going to find the gift or the light in that shadowed part if we keep it at arm's length, or if we push it away. This part of the process is called “befriending.”

To do this, you need to choose a shadowed part that you want to work with. Then you're going to take some steps towards it with befriending in mind. We always do this part slowly and gently.

Last year I read a wonderful novel, The Lion Is In, by Delia Ephron. In the story, three women come upon a billiard hall in the desert. There's a lion in a cage inside. He's an old lion who has been kicked out of the circus, and the manager thinks the lion will draw a crowd to his business. However, he is so afraid of the lion that he doesn't know what to do with it.

One of the three women is very drawn to the energy of this lion, even though it seems sad and is just moping around. She eventually befriends it. The process goes very slowly. She doesn't just charge up to him and expect to become friends all at once. She goes through the process of very slowly making the lion feel safe with her. She begins by simply pulling up a chair and sitting in silence in the room with him, first for five minutes, then for longer amounts of time.

When I read this novel, it reminded me of a stray cat who appeared on our front porch during the summer of 2011. We had never seen him around before and he would run away if we came close to him. We named him Raj because he looked so majestic. I noticed that once we stopped trying to run after him, he kept coming back. He let us feed him and he liked sleeping on one of our comfy porch chairs.

I wanted to pet him to show him that I loved him, so I got him to be comfortable with me by just standing a few feet away from him and talking to him softly. I had to do this for a couple of weeks. After that I moved a little closer while talking to him. He just looked at me with his big green eyes. After a month or two of that, he let me pet him on the head for just one second, and then the next time a little bit longer. Eventually he even let me stroke his back lightly once in a while.

My point is that in order to befriend one of your personal shadowed parts, you need to do it gently and slowly. If it's a part of you that's been out of balance for a really long time, you will need to get it to feel safe with you again.

Thich Nhat Hanh suggests a beautiful phrase that we can say to ourselves whenever we're feeling sad, angry or out of balance in any way: Dear One, I am here for you. This is the kind of energy we want to project towards our own inner shadowed parts when they get in our way, or when we notice them taking up too much space in our minds and hearts. Dear one, I am here for you.

Here’s a Great Example

An important part of my own journey with inner shadow is how I was able to help my inner shaming part (Malfoy) transform into a wise teacher (Lucius). Take a few minutes to read the story of that transformation and see if it makes the taming of one of your own shadowed parts any easier. NOTE: the password for this page is malfoy (all lower case).

Healing Soul Loss Through SoulCollage®
60 minute SoulCollage® tele-class
with SoulCollage® Facilitator
Michele Grace Lessirard from Florida

Ever felt beside yourself? Like you lost a piece of you and don't know how to get it back? It may be from a divorce, or surgery, or another difficult situation or life event. You find yourself saying "I haven't been the same since__________."

What can you do?

Soul loss happens when we experience a trauma/drama and are not able to return to normal. You may find yourself spinning in the emotions, feelings and energies that seem nameless. Soul loss is a reaction to trauma. Think of a time you were suddenly frightened and your response to that fright. Remember how it felt to return to normal? Soul energy returned on it's own.

But what if it doesn't? How can you call your power back?

During this teaching, we'll work with the cards and ask questions to uncover soul loss that may be stopping your creativity, and living your BIG WHY.

Are you feeling slammed by the energies of the moment?

Are you trying to create something and things are not flowing?

Let's use SoulCollage® to perform your own soul retrieval for those ready to transcend trauma and embody joy.

My Inner Vampire Child

I have a long history working with shadow. Attuning to and honoring the potency of facing fears, I have worked with the depth and delight of remembering that which is mine, that had been dismissed, disowned and dismembered.

Shadow sounds scary, and sometimes it can feel intense and heavy. Over the many years of working with myself and others, exploring below the surface, I have observed that shadow only rises into consciousness when one is ready to move into new abilities. It comes forth to serve one's healing, wholeness and growth. Shadow is only and always about increasing one's capacity to hold more of one's truth. When approached from a holistic and healing perspective, the rising awareness of the dark offers space to see, seeking and finding illumination that will guide choice and assist the potential of evolutionary growth.

Years ago, within a guided journey experience I was surprised to find a small, emaciated and dirty vampire child that I had not known was held within my psyche. She was barely visible and well camouflaged, dwelling deep in an underground grotto. I could see that she was sad and fearful, emitting energetic waves of deep mistrust. She was not frightening or pathetic, although I was aware that others might have seen that in her. Rather, I felt in my own body her sense of profound overwhelm. It was a distinctive kind of flooding horror, that she was experiencing.

Through her, this single part of self that I had no conscious knowledge of previously, I began to deepen my relationship with the power of seeking shadow. Slowly listening and moving closer over time, I began to offer her warmth and sustenance. I learned to understand the language of my own darkness as I listened to her stories.

This journey led me to unravel and understand my own experiences. My inability to be connected to feeling states became illuminated through her. I, too, was empathic and overwhelmed by the emotional pain of others. I saw where I was unconsciously operating as the wounded child, hidden, a victim, and other times feeding myself on the energy of others.

I gathered and worked with memory threads of my earliest sense of being flooded by emotional pain. I painted, created, made collages, and wrote as I explored these experiences. I explored my womb time, touching the time before birth, when I was in utero, my own sacred cave and my birth mother was planning my adoption. I re-remembered a time later in my infancy after she decided to keep me, her sadness and confusion permeated my small psychic space and I put on emotional armor to protect myself. All of these selves needed to be seen and known.

Over the year, my inner vampire child has grown and appeared in new forms, redefining herself, meeting me as she integrates her abilities and finds new strengths. Through this one opening, I activated my own healing, developed new abilities, met my deeper needs and strengthened my empathic boundaries. My vampire child was a doorway to discovery and illumination.

Shadow parts and stories may come through the surface of life unexpectedly. Images and energies can creep up on you, surface during process, art-making or open up within a powerful conversation. When they come there is an opportunity to connect, listen and learn. Parts of self, once seen will also evolve, change, grow and move in unexpected ways. They have their own histories and mysteries to share with you.

Using SoulCollage® to explore shadow is a potent process. If you are working with shadow stories, having guidance and support may be necessary and helpful. Shadow work often requires companioning and expanded perspective.

KaleidoSoul Creations
As promised, we are featuring SoulCollage® cards from our readers in each issue.

Each card below is a card from one SoulCollager's Deck that represents the Committee Shadow in their lives.

Committee Suit

I am one who feels ashamed of my fiery demons, and the undeniable darkness within me.

Committee Suit

I am the One who stings when provoked. My words and actions can inflict pain on others, though I tend to see my stings as defensive. I emerged in you when you were a child and felt hurt and defenseless yourself. I enabled you to sting back. I embody your Scorpio Moon energy. Friends and family know my verbal zaps are superficial and followed by an apology. They know I’m covering up my soft insides.

Fear & Distrust
Committee Suit

I am the one who distrusts others and their motives. As my card shows, I suspect they have a "card up their sleeves." I am the one who is fearful of crowded places, people, and shadows (including my shadow cards!). I am the one who fears what danger and deception lies in the darkness, and in gathering storm clouds.

The Fool
Committee Suit

I am one who plays the fool. I am one who covers my pain with laughter and humor. I am one who hides my feelings behind a mask. I am one who is afraid (chicken) to be real and authentic.

Queen in the Shadows
Committee Suit

I Am the One Who... wants, needs, must possess. The flames within burn hot and influence my outer choices. I am a part of you that you refuse to acknowledge, yet I also play a valuable role as provider of abundance in your life. Thanks to me, you have enough that you can freely share with others. I am the voice that drives you to new experiences and new knowledge. I am part of the whole that is you and not shameful or to be denied.

Control Freak

I am the one who is the control freak. I have to have it my way; I will fight for my way if necessary; I am here to remind you to step back and let other's take control, you do not have to do it all/control it all. Breathe into the allowing.

Running Away
Committee Suit

I am the one who runs from difficulties and responsibilities, seeking the soft, easy way. I am the one who runs away from torn and broken dreams. I am the one who is cowardly and broken.

Please feel free to submit one of your cards for a future issue by sending a reply email to this newsletter.

For five hours we'll gather together via an easy-to-click-and-access Zoom video conference link where we can actually see each other. (You can also call in via phone).

Anne Marie will lead the first 90 minutes of our time together with teaching and guided meditation on Indra's Net, which will lead us into talking about community, how wondrously we're all connected, and how we can represent these connections in our SoulCollage® Decks.

Then we'll break so everyone can be on their own for two hours to make cards. We'll turn the recording off but Anne Marie will stay on the video link (as she makes her own cards) in case you have a question or want to share something.

Then we'll gather together for the last 90 minutes for some more teaching, lots of sharing, and a closing circle to send us back into our lives.

It's going to be AWESOME!

If you can't attend in person, we'll send you the recording of the first and last 90 minutes of teaching and examples, along with all handouts.

NEW! Online Workshop

Working with Your Inner Writer with SoulCollage® Facilitator Nancy Norbeck

June 11-25, 2017

Face to Face is an exploration of what writing is, what it means to write, and how we can use our SoulCollage® decks to tap into stories and ideas that we might not ordinarily find - in our decks, or in our own imaginations. Perfect for the beginning writer or for a seasoned writer looking for a new approach, Face to Face will give you the chance to get writing (or get writing again!) in a friendly, supportive group environment.

This course is designed to give new and seasoned fiction writers new ways to engage with their writing, using SoulCollage® to tap into intuition for background material, writing experiments, and more formal writing projects. Character development, plot, setting, and other story elements will be enhanced using SoulCollage® and other images. And we'll be writing live on the call!

Bonus: Be one of the first TEN to register, and you'll receive a FREE coaching session with Nancy via telephone or Skype. This 30-40 minute session can be used for help with your writing or another creative block.

Led by Nancy Norbeck, Master Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach, SoulCollage® Facilitator, and author of The Silver Child, this online series will meet in a spirit of creativity and collaborative friendship as we all find moments of awe and laughter. We'll see how even our "worst" efforts have value, and how they can lead us into unexpected discovery and inspiration. You may end up with a poem, a short story, the seed of a novel, maybe even a play or a memoir - or more than one.
