SoulCollage’s Mystical Thread of Gold


So strong was Seena Frost’s passion for spirituality that as a young woman she chose to study Divinity at Yale University. Later on, during the time she was developing SoulCollage®, she immersed herself in the thought and writings of an array of spiritual teachers including 14th century German mystic Meister Eckhart, Hildegard of Bingen and many more including her favorite poet, the medieval Sufi mystic Hafiz.

In her humorously engaging book Journal of a Steadfast Fence, Seena expresses, through a series of poems and photographs, the relationships she developed with the wooden posts of a fence which she saw every day on her regular walk. The fact that Seena had such sustained relationships with a series of ancient fence-posts encountered on a daily basis shows how mysticism was for her an integral part of daily life.

Seena “read” the fence-posts rather like we read SoulCollage® cards– honoring, listening to and observing them until they reveal their wisdom. Her relationship with “The Mystic” is particularly strong:

“On the day the Formless One
Fell
And shattered into a zillion forms,
Love became needed and so
Love was born.”

So begins the poem “The Mystic Speaks of Love,” drawing us instantly into the perspective of the Mystic: way “outside the box,” far removed from the safe familiarity of linear thinking, speaking simply yet with authority about something vast and mysterious, both beyond our human understanding and strangely accessible.

Seena’s Mystic, in speaking of love, voices the awareness shared by all mystics, of separation and yearning for one-ness:

“So, when I see you and you see me,
Love appears,
When I bow to you and you bow to me,
Love comes nearer.
Love re-members us
As One.” *

It’s therefore not at all surprising that a golden thread of mysticism runs through the fabric of the SoulCollage® process. A numinous statement by Meister Eckhart inspired Seena to evolve what we SoulCollagers now call the “I Am One Who...” exercise: When the Soul wishes to experience something, She throws an image of the experience before her and enters into her own image.

Again, like the Mystic in Seena’s poem, Meister Eckhart speaks with authority and presence of something mysterious, way beyond logic, yet signaling an awareness to which we connect through our intuition and our imagination.

SoulCollage® encourages us to engage in a process of drawing out and cultivating the subliminal, poetic dimensions of our awareness. Such forms of awareness show an affinity with the Mystic’s perspective. Perhaps the Mystic archetype is alive in most of us SoulCollagers, to some degree and in some form. As with any archetype, there are many ways we can explore the Mystic in ourselves through our SoulCollage® practice.

First of all, with an open, relaxed awareness, enjoy gently exploring your whole deck and just seeing how and where the Mystic may already be present in your cards. Here’s one of mine from my Committee Suit, called The Daydreamer.
I Am One Who loves to waft off into daydreaming. For me the everyday world can become the starting point for spiraling journeys in unexpected directions. I Am One Who enjoys playfully opening doorways to numinous new territories of creativity. I Am One Who is open to Mystery.

To align yourself with, or meet up with the Mystic already in your deck, here are some questions for guidance:

• Which of your Neters have a mystical leaning?
  
• Is there a special tone to the voice of your Inner Mystic?


• What animals, birds and people does your Mystic like best? v
  
• Are there doorways in your deck opening into territories of mystical affinity?
  
• Are there pathways, roads or rivers in your deck leading to mysterious places?
  
• What colors does your Mystic particularly savor?
  

As well as exploring the mystical elements already present in your deck, you may feel motivated to create a Mystic card intentionally, to support you in cultivating closer attention to the Mystic in you. Or perhaps, as I did, you have a “mystery” card whose place in your deck has eluded you until now, and who turns out to be your Mystic card? Here’s mine:

I Am the One Who follows with devotion the path of the Mystic. I am at one with animals and with nature. The light stroking the forest floor to emerald is in my fingers; the muzzle of the fox nuzzling her sibling is my nose too. I too feel the roughness of fox-fur and sniff the musty scent. I Am One Who cultivates a radical receptivity to the Sacred.

Exploring the presence of the Mystic in your deck can become a rich and rewarding adventure. I invite you to enjoy uncovering the voice, the wisdom, the soulfulness and the humor of the Mystic in you.
