Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul.com, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Some Thoughts on Turning 60

Last year I celebrated my 60th birthday. Some of you are already past that milestone; others are still looking forward to it. Okay, I’ll admit that I personally wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. For some reason, I wasn’t quite able to reconcile myself with that particular number! I had made the card (below), Graceful Aging, years ago but its wisdom has eluded me because I simply have never thought of myself as “aging.”

One reason for this is my brother Joe who is ten years older than me. When I turned 30, I looked at him and thought, “He’s 40, doesn’t seem old to me, so that means I must not be old!” The same thing occurred when I came upon 40, and then 50. As I approached 60, however, something changed. I still had those thoughts about Joe- “Hmmm… he’s 70, still active, still happy, still healthy…etc.” But this time there was something else.

My father died at age 72. I found myself thinking, “If I die when my dad died, that means I only have 12 years left.” Of course, you can imagine what that particular thought did to my entire outlook on life. Inner panic ensued. Anxiety. A few sleepless nights.

At some point during those weeks before my actual birthday, I came across the above quote by Virginia Woolf. I had seen it before, but I was younger then. Now that I was fast approaching 60, it seemed to be imbued with brighter layers of wisdom. I realized that I needed to alter my own thoughts about “aging,” or I would be doomed to live out the remainder of my years flooded with fear and uncertainty.

Around the same time, I happened to listen to an interview with Dr. Pat Carrington, a leading psychologist and a pioneer in the field of energy psychology. She is currently 92 years old and still full of productive, compassionate fire and light. What a blessing to come across that audio at just that time. Along with some powerful affirmations about not subscribing to the media’s obsession with the downside of aging (which I plan to use with my EFT Tapping practice), I also seem to have caught hold of her attitude, her altered aspect towards growing older. What impressed me the most about her interview is that she doesn’t even think about her age unless she’s at the doctor’s office or renewing her license! Age simply isn’t an important factor in her daily dealings.

So, I am choosing to alter my own aspect to the sun by changing my mind about my age. Perhaps I do have 12 years left; I will make the most of them! Maybe I have more than that, maybe even less. No one knows when their last breath will be taken. Until my time is up, I intend to think of my age as the number of years I been gifted with, instead of fretting over how “old” I’m getting.

A few days after my 60th birthday, I did a SoulCollage® reading by asking my deck, “Who has wisdom for me as I turn 60?” I received more blessings and much wisdom from the four cards that I drew. If this is a topic that interests you, you can see the cards I drew and read what they said to me here

CHALLENGE

What is your mindset about aging? Is it something you’re comfortable with or would you like to change it? Find a new and different thought about growing older to put into your landscape of inner voices. Some examples from Dr. Pat Carrington:
  • I choose to think about the creative possibilities that aging can bring.
  • I choose to immerse myself in ways of improving my life and making it grow.
  • I choose to release myself from the tyranny and control of the media.
  • I choose to use my increasing age to stand back and look at life a bit differently.
  • I choose to expand my horizons in unexpected ways as I age.
  • I choose to be even more my real self as the years go by.
Which one of these affirmations resonates most with you? Consider making a SoulCollage® card to give image to this new mindset about growing older.

Or do a reading with your own deck similar to mine from above. Which of your Neters will guide you?

Guest Columnist: Catherine Anderson

My name is Catherine Anderson and I'm a SoulCollage® Facilitator and Trainer from Charlotte, NC. I am delighted to be adding my voice to Soul Songs and hope that my words inspire you to look more deeply into your deck of SoulCollage® cards.

Aging into Elderhood

When you think of growing older do you think of yourself as aging or eldering? When I looked through my deck of SoulCollage® cards to find those that related to aging, I found that all the cards containing images of old people were cards that spoke of wisdom. My Wise Woman Council card shows a very old woman sitting in front of an ancient tree. As I thought about this I realized that I equate aging with the acquisition of wisdom. Of course this isn't always true, but this belief is as a result of the influence of my paternal grandmother, who was a prominent figure in my life when I was very young, and who I considered to be a very wise person. She was a strong matriarchal figure whom you could always turn to for sage advice.

In his book Conscious Living, Conscious Aging, Ron Penny says that "the role of the elder is archetypal, built into the human psyche over countless generations. That energy is alive in us. That role remains as necessary as ever for the collective human race ..."

In our culture it seems that old people are not as revered as they are in indigenous cultures. This seems like such a waste of all that life experience and acquired knowledge, especially as we are living longer. So how to make my elder years meaningful? Instead of dreading getting older, how can I prepare to use the knowledge of life I have acquired to benefit others?

I looked through my cards to see if there were any that might give me guidance on how to do this, and the first one that had advice for me was my Community card for my mother (who better to give me advice on getting older than my 82-year-old mother?)!

My mother reminds me:

I am one who fully embraces every opportunity that comes my way. I live without fear and am open to new adventures. I give you permission to do the same.

Then my Ancestral Wisdom Council card (above) reminded me:

I am one who is connected to the earth and the stars. I call upon the ancestors to support me and know that they still live in me. Remember the wise ones who came before you and know that you too contain wisdom.

And finally, my Community card for my paternal grandmother said:

I am one who passes my wisdom to you through the touch of my hands, and through all the food I cooked for you and all the clothes I made for you. I reassure you that all will be well and that you can do whatever you set out to do. Know that I am always here for you as we are connected in the cycle of life.

My cards helped me to realize that I do not see aging as something to be avoided but something to celebrate. Consider how you might live your "wisdom years." What does your future Elder self want you to know? You might even make a card for your Inner Elder as a reminder that eldering rather than aging is a conscious choice.

Let your Elder guide you into your Elderhood.

Helping Hands
Suit Unknown
Laura
California

I am the one who is in the sunset of life. I follow the guideposts as I discover them – road signs, lighthouses, rock cairns, gates and doors along the way. I know that help is there for me when the way is steep, uddy or rocky. I have helped and supported others from a young age. It is now my turn to accept help. Those fitter than myself will support me, holding my hand literally and figuratively. They encourage me to keep going, provide the motivation to keep moving and lift me across the rough patches when I falter. It is prudent for me to not only acceptt help as it is offered, but also to notice when I could use assistance and ask for it.

Growing Old Together
Community Suit
Kas
Pennsylvania

I have shared many years with you. I am growing older and so are you. I want to thank you for the gift of sharing my life with you. I am the one who reminds you that growing old is not for the faint-hearted. It takes time for the fields to produce a rich harvest. For the wine to create the subtle yet pronounced flavors that only can come through time. With time and grace, I too will be richer of heart and plentiful with spirit. I hope to grow older with you. But, I know that my heart is big enough to hold you within it where ever you have to go. I know there are many more journeys for me. I will meet you if we travel separately.

I am one who has seen many sunrises and sunsets. I am one who still watches winter turn to spring, and summer to fall year after year. I watch as the sands of time flow over my life, and know I have more years behind me than ahead of me. I am one who has experience, wisdom, perspective, inner resources, adaptability, optimism, and joy in life.

I am the crone. My hand has grown old with experience. I carry layers of the heavy, thick clay of those experiences under my nails. I value lifelong growth. I am thankful that I can grow into new and larger chambers as I age and my soul develops and claims space for a greater capacity to love. I am thankful that God has given me time to become wiser. I am thankful that all the small chambers of earlier experiences that are still with me for ballast in rough seas. I give you the ability to testify that there is survival, growth and stability ahead.
