Soul Singing with Anne Marie
Anne Marie, the creator of
Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, this column is especially for you.

Indra’s Net

It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated.
We are all caught in an inescapable network of
mutuality, tied together into a single garment of destiny.
Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
1967 Christmas Sermon on Peace

Did you know that when Seena Frost first created the process that we now know as SoulCollage®, she was advertising it as "The Process of the One and the Many?" I find this very helpful information, because even though her publishers changed its name to something softer, more colorful, and more marketable, the whole process really is about expressing "The One" and "The Many."

The One refers to Source or Spirit whose bright energy weaves us all together, gives us life and breath. The Many refers to all the different parts and pieces that make up our individual worlds: the inner voices, the archetypal energies, the animal guides and our personal community members who love and challenge us in our lifetime. All of these Many parts and pieces are connected to one another just as we are each connected to one another, through the energy of Source/Spirit/God/The One.

We use the story of Indra's Net often in SoulCollage® to express the reality of how all living, beings are connected:

Once Indra the Hindu God of the Heavens, invited the Buddha to visit his heavenly palace. Wanting to decorate the palace to impress his holy guest, he ordered that thousands of diamonds be brought. Each gem was then sewn into a knot on a giant net. The net was hung over the walls and ceilings of his palace. When the Buddha entered Indra's Great Hall and caught site of the net of jewels, he beamed with delight and danced to the center of the room. There he turned round and round smiling. "This net is perfect, Indra. It captures the nature of reality so well. Every jewel is lit by the same light, and in every jewel is held the reflection of all the other jewels."

As the New Year begins, I urge each of you to write "The One and the Many" on top of a fresh journal page, and spend some time reflecting on how you are connected through "The One" to every other living thing on this planet. How does this affect your relationships with those you love? With strangers?

Imagine yourself as one of the sparkling jewels on Indra’s Net. Close your eyes and breathe in the beauty of all the other shimmering jewels and know that you are connected via Spirit’s energy to each and every other "jewel" on this Net, even those who have passed on, even those you’ve never met but whose art or writing or music has touched you in some way.

Also, I encourage you to spend some time gazing at the cards sent in by readers for this issue. Perhaps you will be led to create your own card honoring this powerful and very real idea of The One and the Many.

Anne Marie lives in eastern Massachusetts with her middle-aged husband, an elderly dog and two adolescent felines who keep them all young. You can read more about how SoulCollage® assisted her on her cancer journey on her website SOS Cancer Journeys.

Guest Columnist: Imelda Maguire

Hello! I'm Imelda Maguire, SoulCollage® facilitator from Donegal, Ireland. Also a counselor and poet, my joy is in working with others in healing and creativity. This column is for those of you who have already made some cards & are ready to discover the symphony of voices inside of you and around you.

The One and the Many

In my work as a counselor, one of the confusions I most frequently hear clients express is a need to understand how they can find their true Self. They might say something like... Sometimes I feel like this, and other times I feel like that, and I don’t know which one is the real me.

People often have the idea that they should be able to pin themselves down with a clear description of what type of person they are. The idea that both, or many, ways of feeling or thinking or responding might all be authentic expressions of aspects of their true self can be reassuring, eye-opening, and very liberating. Once grasped, the concept of being one person with many sub-personalities, aspects, or facets, is taken on board and embraced by most people enthusiastically.

For a few, it can be overwhelming, and especially difficult to acknowledge and own the shadow aspects that show up - but that is a topic for another day, and has already been well covered in articles on the SoulCollage® and Kaleidosoul websites, and in SoulCollage® Evolving by Seena B. Frost, originator and founder of SoulCollage®, who describes the concept of the One and the Many as a foundation principle of the process.

In a 2004 article on the principle, and its connection to the transpersonal Source card, Seena says: "Here is my position and the one on which I have built the SoulCollage® practice: I am one whole, unique person and, at the same time, I am made up of many parts. You are the same. Your family is many and yet one family. So also is our nation, our planet, our solar system, our universe. All life, and indeed all that exists, is nested into Oneness, like those little Russian nesting dolls." This resonates so deeply for me that I think I could say it is the most important aspect of my relationship with SoulCollage®, meeting as it does some of my most deeply-held values and spiritual beliefs. From the time when I accepted the Bahà’ì Faith at age 15, the idea of unity in diversity, and the principle that one God can have many names and expressions, have been central to my world-view, so of course, SoulCollage® and the idea of the One and the Many were a seamless fit, and more importantly, a wonderful way of exploring and expressing that richness and variety that I find within and around my own self.

This is why it is such an important and exciting principle for me - because it has something meaningful and important to say about my own internal world, and also about the larger, greater world - indeed, universe - around me. To encounter and accept the variety of "selves" or Neters within me affirms that in the world around me, whatever variety or differences I may perceive, there is still an essential unity, an essential One-ness in all of that too. And this is one of the reasons why I think exposure to and experience with SoulCollage® for children and young people is actually a wonderful tool in the promotion of inter-racial understanding, elimination of prejudices, and yes, the establishment of world peace!

I am so grateful to Seena Frost for her description and explanation of The One and the Many, the affirmation I find within of my own deeply-held belief in the essential one-ness of all life.

The card I have chosen to accompany this article is "The Gift-Giver:"

I am one whose gifts are generous, abundant, and wonderful. I give freely, and you may receive as much as you wish from this vast store.

Each card below is a card that represents "The One & The Many" from one SoulCollager's Deck.

Many Into One
New Hampshire

I am the One who contains multitudes. I am young and old, male and female. I am as diverse as the colors of the rainbow. I come from the Source and will one day return to it. Today I gaze at it in awe.

The One and the Many

Hush.. they can be heard behind the veils.
Senses draw them forth in glimpses.
Speak.. bold utterances lie fitted
In narrow spaces formed and familiar.
Give them names, "I am One" all.
Embrace.. among the many each be told.

The Many Faces of Love

I am the one who has may faces. I am the one who is unique in my own-ness and so connected to all others. I am the one who loves to touch and see and listen to many as it resonate within a deeper part of me. I am the one who has a very large family on so many levels. We cannot be separated as we are the One and The Many!

Seena Frost
Community Suit

I Am One Who is the One who brought SoulCollage® to Many! I birthed this process so that we can all bring healing and peace to the world, one card at a time. I am Seena Frost.

Dancing with the Tree

I am One and Many Who remember Christmases past. I am a wistful child who wishes she could feel the magic of Christmas morning again. I am the stressed out mother who had too much to do, bake, buy, decorate and it wasn't even my holiday. I am a grumpy Jew who misses seasonal decorations. And I am still the joyful spirit who goes dancing with the magical evergreen trees in this cold, dark time of year. Our message to you is to enjoy the lights on houses in the neighborhood, sing along with the old songs in the break room at night, light the candle on your winter altar, build a fire, watch the snowfall, watch the Light dwindle and then return. The Light of the Universe never goes out; it's a Ner Tamid no matter what culture you live in. And the sparks from Shechinah live in us all.

Please feel free to submit one of your cards for a future issue by sending a reply email to this newsletter.
