Soul Singing With Anne Marie

Hi! I'm Anne Marie, the creator of KaleidoSoul, and a SoulCollage® facilitator in Massachusetts. If you're just starting to sing your song with SoulCollage®, then this column is especially for you!

Suggestions for Newcomers to SoulCollage:
  • Find a SoulCollage Facilitator near you.
  • Download the Getting Started with SoulCollage
    Workshop in a Box
    .
  • Visit KaleidoSoul and click on What is SoulCollage, SoulCollage Deck, and Making the Cards on the left menu.
  • Seena Frost is the one who created SoulCollage®. Visit Seena's website and see what four cards come up for you in the automatic reading, then read some of Seena's articles.
  • Read Seena's book, SoulCollage.
  • Listen to Seena's CD, Introduction to SoulCollage.
  • Don't forget to take it easy and always, always trust the process!

Why Create Other Suits for Your Deck?

When Seena Frost created SoulCollage, she suggested a framework of four suits. Together, they (Committee, Community, Companions, and Council) form a wholeness to our lives and our decks that is visceral and complete. However, Seena also allowed for us to add other suits as we see fit. I like this because it gives me an even wider wingspan of creative self-expression.

You may find inspiration for other suits for your deck in many places. There is no exact way to know where or when inspiration will strike you. The idea is to simply remain open to what life brings you!

For example, I read a book called A Map For Joy a few years ago and it contained short chapters on 16 ways that I can incorporate more conscious joy into my life. I was just beginning my SoulCollage practice at the time, so I decided to create a suit around the theme of this book. I call my suit Keys to Joy, and you can see one of the cards from this suit in the column to the right.

    Examples of Other Suits

Also in the colunn to the right, you will see cards from other suits in a few other SoulCollager's decks. Additionally, here is a list of ideas for other suits. Read it carefully and see if any of them resonate with you:

Ancestors, Future Selves, Guardians, Wisdom of Place, Past Lives, Science, Stories, Synchronicities, Muses, Trees/Tree Medicine, Alchemy,Witnesses, World Events, Keys to Joy, Personal History, Dreams, Quotations, Words, Songs, Sacred Places, Celebrations

(Thanks to facilitators Laurel, Dianne, and Alia, and SoulCollager Caroline for some of the above suggestions.)

Don't let this list be inclusive, however. Allow anything and everything to inspire you. Look at your life. What are you passionate about? If you want to create another suit for your deck, let your ideas come from your passions.

If you are interested in creating a Personal History Suit for your own deck, please join us for this month's Tele-Playshop (a short playful workshop that takes place over the phone) with our special guest Anne Boedecker, who has spent lots of time and energy on her own Personal History Suit (see one of her cards fromthis suit in the columnn to the right). More details.

Soul Symphonies With Karen

My name is Karen Mann and I'm a SoulCollage® facilitator from Melbourne, Australia. This column is for those of you who have already made some cards & are ready to discover the symphony of voices inside of you and around you.

Not Just the 4 Traditional SoulCollage Suits
Your SoulCollage deck is a personal expression of who you are, what your life experiences have been and what your interests are. For many SoulCollage artists the four traditional SoulCollage suits contain a broad representation of themselves, their lives and their communities, from a variety of angles.

However for some, four suits are not enough to capture all aspects of self. In these situations an individual may choose to add an extra suit (or more) to their SoulCollage deck. In the SoulCollage book Seena Frost says "the deck has at least four separate suits symbolizing the multiple Neters of your personal and unique life (pg 5)."

I love that the SoulCollage process is flexible and that Seena Frost has encouraged each of us to create a deck that best works for us. While I have not created a new suit in my own deck (yet), I have sometimes made cards that do not seem to fit into one of the traditional suits and I wonder if one day they may end up in a suit of their own.

When making SoulCollage cards I try not to get caught up in which suit they would belong in and how to categorise them. I feel it is more important to use this process to assist me express myself and explore the deeper meaning behind the Neters than to be waylaid by the technicalities of which suit this card belongs to. I trust that I will learn something valuable through making, journaling and reading a card, no matter which suit it fits (or does not fit) into. I also trust that in time, I will be led to know which suit the card belongs in.

One card I have made which does not seem to easily sit in one of the four traditional suits is the card I call Trust the Unfolding (see left). I made this card after reading a quote by Ram Dass where he was speaking about different stages of the "journey" that he has been on. He said that each stage contributed to the next like the unfolding of a lotus flower and that looking back, he realized that many of the experiences that made little sense to me at the time they occurred were prerequisites for what was to come later.

This quote really touched me. It got me thinking about events in my life that had not made sense at the time, but in retrospect were huge catalysts for change. This card references the minor car crashes or major car breakdowns have marked times of change
(or a need for change) in my life.

I am the one who can look back and honour that everything has happened exactly as it was meant to. All the events thus far in my life have been perfect and my life is unfolding just as it should. Sometimes the real gems of learning cannot be seen at the time, but when I look back they shine brightly as special moments.

This card serves as a great reminder to me of the perfection of unfolding events, and although I'm not sure if it belongs in my Council or Committee suit, or perhaps a personal suit based on quotes that have inspired me or a 'personal history' type suit, about past events in my life, I don't think this particularly matters. I love having this card in my SoulCollage deck and I have learnt much about myself through working with this card. I "trust the unfolding" and know that at some stage I will be sure about which suit it belongs to. I'm trusting the process and enjoying the journey!

If you are looking to "organize" your life in a way that is deeper and more soul-consuming than an ordinary organizer, then Jennifer Louden's The Life Organizer: A Woman's Guide to a Mindful Year is exactly what you need. The following questions are a direct quote from the first page, and are also what the entire Life Organizer is focused on: What if there was a way to organize and guide your life that more closely resembled lying back on an inner tube as the current carried you along... rather than a furious, exhausting upstream paddle? What if self-mercy and listening to your authentic desires were your truest guides, far more trustworthy than gauging how much you accomplish in a day or what you earn? If you've ever longed for the answers to these questions, then you owe it to yourself to purchase this book! Order before April 1 and it's 20% off, plus receive lots of special gifts with it.
